Lack of ram memory [only 1 gigabyte] isn't helping. Processor's a little old, but not too bad. I would recommend adding some more ram.
Still running XP on it? How much space left on the hard drive? Have you set a static swapfile size yet? Defrag lately? (Granted not a super crucial thing, but if it's been a year or more since it sure wont hurt to run disk cleanup and defrag) And heres some info about a defrag tool that does the work in 1/4 of the time the windows native defrag app does it in,,, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UltraDefrag Check for viruses and spyware? Is it running hot? Have ya' cleaned out the heatsink for the cpu lately?
Oh, internet is slow,,, Slow all around, slow loading web pages or just downloading? And is this system new for you or is it the same one you're using to compare the base speed of what "not slow" is?
do you mean here?...or everywhere...cuz I notice something is up with server speed here the last few days
XP As I clicked on the C drive to see the properties it shows 140GB (70.3 gb used) and (70.2 gb free) whats that? Defrag about every four to six weeks. I have Malwarebytes Anti-malware ( with key) and Microsoft Security Essentials (believe it or not its actually good I was impressed) running hot? I do hear the fans turn up the speed once in awhile....whats the heatsink?
I just mean this site seems slow to load pages lately....especially pictures and avatars...but I dont notice on other forums I use registry mechanic too...it seems to help..Im just mentioning it because you didnt
its slow all around downloading music, movies, programs, loading pages and loading videos on youtube..... I was talking to this other guy in another forum and I tolled him i had a motorola sb 4200 box which is connected to a TV cable line and then to my computer. the box requires you to put in these two separate numbers in the internet connection options in the proxy section I believe and then wahla! you have internet! no am not paying for it! so what this guy was saying was that maybe comcast cable noticed that i was receiving more "signal" to my cable TV and might of notice the internet use and might of tuned down the cable signal now! so thats why am receiving slow internet! at the begin of March the internet was fine but now it all runs at a certain speed..... my internet connection says 100mbps and thats what its always been but now it doesnt feel like that............
You may want to make sure the vent for the fan isn't blocked. When I have my laptop on a counter I have to lift it up with something so the vent's not blocked or it will overheat.
I just saw this on the news. They limit people who download too much. I used to have comcast with 10 other people and they threatened to stop service if we continued to download too much. I guess we were in the top 1% in the nation for the amount of downloads. It's bad service imo.
The heatsink is the thing that the fan for the CPU is attached to. A.K.A. that big boxy thing sticking off the motherboard with the fan on it. Open the case and have a peek inside, is it really dusty? If it is, hit the hardware store and get some "air in a can" it's just that with a little nozzle for blowing out the fins in the heatsink. If it's really really dusty, might want to have a vacuum on hand with the nozzle inside te case to catch all the crap you blow free. Of course this is probably not related to reduced internet speeds, you would notice the system itself chugging more than likely. Still, couldn't hurt to do a little Maintower housekeeping.
Yea', Cap's suck ass. Our entire freaking network is loosely at 200MB a day aside from a 4 hour window overnight... Hughesnet sucks.
