I submit for your consideration that Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, was the last - if not only true Christian President.

I draw this conclusion from his actions during and particularly after his presidency. I challange any one of you to show any other president whose focus was on the poor and the mistreated, peace and social justice more than President Carter.

Examples: Volunteer for Habitat for Humanity
Efforts toward peace ie the Camp David Accords between
    Egypt and Israel
2009 - Building houses in Vietnam
    Sunday School Teacher
    Against Death Penalty
    Condemned Torture
Foundation to combat disease in third world countries.

    Nobel Peace Prize
    International Human Rights Award
    Ansel Adams Conservation Award
    Mahatma Gandhi Global Nonviolence Award
    International Child Survial Award
    American Peace Award
    Distinguished Humanitarian Award
and on and on and on.

What other former President had strived to be like Jesus more than Jimmy Carter - NONE. And yet he is trashed by much of the Christian right.

    God bless you Jimmy Carter!!

Carter was a very, very bad person and would have crucified Jesus himself if he had the chance.

AHHHHHAHAHAHAHA - how miserable you must be to attack someone who has been all over the world for peace - Personally been to the most underdeveloped countries in the world using his reputation to help the hungry and sick. Classic argument - good is bad, war is peace, kindness is cruel, hate is love - what a bunch of bozos
Name one other president who has tried to be more like Christ. Christians wo do not recognize his faith have taken their eyes off the mark.

Whoah, you found pictures of a guy doing nice things. Sure he set plenty of things in motions that created plenty of those awful conditions in the first place; but he did some photo ops and that invalidates everything else.

It's like when the Pope walks out in his expensive attire in his palace filled with untold wealth and valuables, then says 'our prayers are with the poor and starving'.

    Also, some quick facts:
When Carter took office in 1977, the inflation rate was 5.22%. Four years later it was 11.83% and during his presidency it actually hit as high as 14.78%

The cost of living adjustments (COLA) when Carter took office was 5.9%. Three years later it was 14.3%

When Carter took office in January of 1977, interest rates were 6.25% When left left office four years later they were 20.00%

His abandoning of the Shah of Iran is a catalyst of quite a bit of modern day terrorism and much of the instability that remains in that region today.

And there was some stuff about hostages in Iran and gas in America actually being rationed for quite some time; but why continue further?

Oh, and you know how that REALLY mean Mugabe guy obliterated Zimbabwe? You probably shouldn't read this article about who was responsible for that happening.

But hey, he did some photo ops so we can probably consider it even.

Thanks for taking this as a serious submission. I never said Pres. Carter was one of the best presidents ever. For whatever reason some miserable things happened during his administration. Iran, I think, was probably beyound his control or anyone.
But this is a thread to discuss christian issues.

My point was - He is the last, if not only, Christian President. I could continue on with humanitarian award after award but that too might be unconvincing to those who are jaded by the state of the country in his administration - or else conservative Republicans who don't believe any Democrat capable of actually doing good.
Prior, during, or after their administrations, have you seen Pres. Nixon, Pres. Reagan, Pres. Bush or Pres. Clinton doing anything to try to help the plight of the poorest nations on earth - sure Bush and Clinton were in Haiti (now that was a photo op) - but how often and with what regularity. Carter has been there time after time after time.
Just because he photographed does not demean the fact that he was there. He was a president of the US for God's sake - in the slums - sure pictures were taken. But attention was drawn to those tragedies - the attention of those with the means to help.

Admit it - Jimmy Carter may not have been the best President but he has been far and away the most demonstrably Christian president.

There have been quite a few Christian presidents after Carter. All of them.

I'd dare say no President is any 'better' a Christian than any other, as part of the Christian thing is not judging one another. Not that most of them listen to that doctrine.

They all claim to be Christian - but it is not for me to judge - I can, however, see the fruit from where I am- as for me - I see far more fruit from Pres. Carter than say - Nixon- or Bush II.
Only when the branch is attached to the vine can fruit appear.
