I am finishing up a book and I need to start thinking about sending it to someone that can check and edit grammar, formatting, etc.

They always say that it is important to have your stuff looked over by someone who is annal about grammar and proper formatting, before you get a proof published.

So where would I find a proofreader and about how much it would cost?

Figured it would not hurt asking here.

unknown i use a proofreader for all my major written work.
if you have seen my other posts around here at hip forums, you would notice, i'm not the best when it comes to the kings english.
i have always been a piss poor proofreader, and one hell of a great researcher.
in school and college, i would trade my great research skills with, people who had great proofreading skills. it was a win win situation for both of us! :cheers2:

where i live, there are several colleges and high schools.
i'm always able to find top english students at the high schools or, top english majors at the colleges, who are quite willing to barter their services or, i pay them for their services.
i rent a room to a college student whom, is an english major. i give her a 20% discount on her room and board, for her to proofread my important written work.

if you live were there is a college and/or high school, i would suggest you do a little networking. you will find a lot of good to great proofreaders that way, and at a good price too.
good luck to you mate! :D

Maybe someone that proof reads for a newspaper? An english teacher? A small publishing company? A grant writer? Another writer? Check the internet for proof readers? That's all I can think of. (or -that's all of which I can think) Good luck, although you seem like a guy that makes his own luck.---------

    Thanks.

I did google and look for some guidelines as to prices.

But the prices they wanted were insane.

I am using a 6x9 template. But there is no graphics and I just want to make sure my grammar usage and spelling is correct. Then checking for those formatting errors or problems.

The idea about using University students is good. Although I will have to use the Internet for that.

I will have to check around and see if there are University students offering freelance services. There has got to be such a website.

But I really appreciate both of your comments.

What is the volume of work to be proofread? I might be able to do this if you can send it to me on-line as an e-mail attachment, but I'm not sure what a reasonable rate might be. If you'd like to see my work here, go to Writers Forum, select Display Options by thread starter, ascending sequence, from beginning, and look for all threads by 'dirtydog'.

Payment would be by mailed cheque, on receipt of finished product. (A certain amount of trust is required here.) Finished product would be an attachment to an e-mail, in text or RTF format.

I imagine there are hordes of students, graduates, and out-of-work writers with time on their hands that will do it at a competitive price.
I'd decide in advance how much you are realistically willing to pay for the service, and put an advert somewhere.

Professional proofreaders (in the UK at least) tend to have undergone specific training and attained relevant qualifications, which is why the agencies can be quite expensive.
They do however offer a high-level of service, and even though publishers have their own proof readers, it makes a big difference to hand in work that is already at a high standard.

Obviously you might have to compromise a little on the depth of the proofreading if you go outside the normal agencies, but there's no reason why you can't get a good job made of it.
