When the British invasion occurred, the Beatles were definitely number 1. But the establishment tried pushing this group onto us maybe because they were more squeaky clean and they had a nicer image. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yrrch43CweU&feature=related"]YouTube- Dave Clark 5 - Glad all over PAX
The British invasion had it's good and bad points. One of the bad points was that alot of song writers would start offering their songs to British artists first instead of Black one like they used to. Here's one song that is a perfect example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MA9K5XRgj8"]YouTube- The Exciters - Do Wah Diddy Diddy And here's the British rendition https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30p0PJrHrgE"]YouTube- Manfred mann - Do wah diddy The Exciters rendition was actually a cover of the British even though they were the first ones who were offered the song. I guess there was just more money back in those days if you could get a British group doing your song. PAX
Otis Redding covered a song by the Rolling Stones. Here's a bit of interesting trivia about the two groups. The rolling Stones got Otis Redding to open for them on a tour they were doing. But he only lasted two shows. As Mick Jagger said "you can't have someone better opening for you." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmNzBIVBV1c&feature=related"]YouTube- OTIS REDDING--CAN'T GET NO SATISFACTION https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIPJbb7z0sU"]YouTube- (HD) (I Can't Get No)Satisfaction : the Rolling Stones PAX
I think what we have forgotten is one of the best sounds of the early 60's. And that's Motown. Although, thinking about it, it probably deserves it's own thread. So if anyone wants to start one I will gladly participate. If not, this is my first one here, on this thread. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4P1x7Yy9CXI"]YouTube- "My Girl" - The Temptations PAX
Well it doesn't look like Motown is of any interest to anyone, with the exception of you Rev J. Back in the early sixties alot of song titles were girls names. I honestly cannot remember any titles that were just a boys name. So, if you can remember any- please post by all means. Oh my god, I remember that song. It was played at every youth club and school disco that I attended. It can not be 1964! How old am I again? I hate this thread!
It figures- the British would have a song with a boys name as the title. But they also had titles with girls names. As far as I know, you never saw an integrated band until the early 60's. This is one of the first of many to come. Pax---I can't e-mail or put anything up--I'm infected bad. But anyway,do you remember Dr. Demento? He played all those odd songs like "white punks on dope" and many others like the one you mentioned. (hip forums must have good protection-hell with it -I'm getting an Apple today)
No- I'm not familiar with Dr. Demento at all. So I googled him and and lo and behold: look what song I came up with. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HZq62nqE78"]YouTube- DR: demento-funny farm He definitely sounds like he was a character- definitely someone I would have liked to listen to when I was growing up. I went through a phase of being addicted to Motown. Most of that music is very real, honest in a way that we will probably never hear again. Some of those trumpet players sound like they were just brought in off the street to play a solo, covered in reverb like you dump a ton of ketchup on a mediocre hamburger. But everybody loved the sound and the vibe, including me. And when the Motown sound evolved and became more sophisticated, I still loved it. I still play all these CDs: Supremes Four Tops Aretha Franklin Smokey Robinson Spinners Temptations Gladys Knight Marvin Gaye The only big hit for the Three Degrees sounds like it should have been a Supremes song but it wasn't, so I play it too.
^^I sent a PM to Pax-Man about this but I think I'll share. There is a wonderful documentary called "Standing in the Shadows of Motown". All of the performers on Motown up to a certain time period had the same backing band. So it was like one band with different lead singers. And the musicians played on more #1 hits than Elvis, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Beach Boys combined. But they all live and some died in obscurity. So this guy Allen Slutsky Tracked the surviving musicians down and interviewed them and arranged a concert. He had alot of the original musicians backing up Joan Osborne, Ben Harper, Bootsy Collins, and Meshell N'Dege O'cello. I highly recommend it. Peace Out, Rev J
