While everyone my age is off getting their degrees and careers in the usual cookie cutter fields, I want to dedicate my energy and time to a different career.

That in permaculture design. With a minor in homesteading. :p

Probably one of my ultimate life goals is to create a real life Garden of Eden. The ultimate ideal that everyone on this board holds close.

That is the career i wish to pursue. However, I don't think any college would offer a degree relevant to what I wish to do.

What would be the best means of aquiring the skills and experience to fulfill this aspiration?

Would Wwoof be a good outlet? I hear many things, good and bad about the farms and organizations that are part of it. I recently sent for a directory and waiting eagerly at the mailbox.

Anyone have experience with Wwoof? How did you learn your skills?

    Thanks.

You should check out schools...even at the community college here there are tons of classes about permaculture and organic farming. That lifestyle is really emphasized around here.

It is definitely something I am interested in and my boyfriend and I just bought our first property so maybe I can make that happen now. It is definitely an awesome goal so good for you!

I think the best way to get the skills is to do internships at CSAs and active permaculture farms. Do you live in an area where that is possible?

    Hey Pedal

I'm interested on how this works out for you, as I'm interested in doing the same thing. I'm taking a Permaculture course in May to get started, but I think it would be great if we share information as it becomes available.

Unfortunately, I live in Houston, Tx.

    Armpit of the gulf.

I recently got the WWoof catalog. Ill be heading to a small homestead outside Austin.

Just have to deal with my family's drama first.

You could probably check out schools that allow you to design your own curriculum. I know there is at least one in Washington State that does, and there is one in Vermont also. You work with an advisor and create your own major and plan all the curriculum.

Also, there are a few Canadian correspondence schools that you might check out, if you want to work at your own pace and don't mind paying the extra rates (especially now that the dollar won't go as far here)

They have a program called Integrated studies... you can do some mixing and matching. You might be able to get some science, some self-directed learning, and some literature courses (I suggest lit, because it is fun to muse on the concepts of permaculture and how it has been reflected - especially the garden of eden concept).

    :D
