My neighbor just told me there's an unregistered sex offender living right next door to me. I'm really worried; when I get out of school there's usually a ton of people around, which makes me feel better about the situation, but I go to extra classes two days a week, and when I get out the street's deserted. Nobody would even be at my house until hours later to notice if I mysteriously don't return. I looked him up and he's not registered, like she said. Should I be genuinely concerned, or am I just overreacting due to nosy gossipers?

definitely overreacting I say. if he's not registered where is your proof that is he a sex offender? beyond that, even if he is a sex offender, it's not like that automatically means he's going to rape every girl he sees, or whatever. I mean I might be a little more careful, you might want to have pepper spray on hand or something, just as a matter of self-defense, but really I don't think that stuff is too cool anyway, it's like... if you're going to be raped, you're going to be raped, everything happens for a reason. so if he rapes you, hey, that is an experience you have to live through and you just have to learn something from it about yourself. that being said, I really doubt he will rape you, and the more freaked out you become about him potentially harming you, in my mind, the more likely that outcome will become in reality because you're meditating on that thought and adding gravity and weight to it, and remember the law of attraction. so I would say just don't worry about it, you can't live all in fear at your own home for goodness sakes. a million billion things could kill you at any second and any person anywhere could rape you, so just chill out, because probably none of those things will happen.

You don't know for sure what kind of person he is. If you have seen him do anything horrible or if he has been strange towards you, then perhaps just be weary of him. But it could just be a neighbour with a grudge against the man, or something that has just come through gossip.

You if live your scared of everything and stop doing things, then you aren't living. But I am sure you'll be fine.

Don't judge him just because society has 'supposedly' labeled him. He is human.

And whats an unregistered sex offender anyway? If he wasn't convicted of anything then why call him an offender.

People wont always be around to help you, and in some cases people won't help you even when presented the opportunity. Its important to know how to protect yourself. And carrying a semi-legal weapon like pepper spray or a pocket knife could turn out bad for you.

I despise the fact offenders are registered, it's like not even giving someone another chance but labelling him as a perv.. ofc he is, but ye.. he can change etc.

as for your concerns, i shouldn't be too worried either. If he isn't registered, no prob. Even if he was.. Not much chance it'll fall on you.

I'm sorry I understand that there is a big fear of them living around you, especially if you are a parent which I am, but not alot of people realize that you can get on that list even if you were 18 and your gf was 16 and you got in trouble.. they don't say anything about what the person did, which I think might cause issues if it were posted maybe but then again atleast we'd know what we are dealing with.. did he sleep with an underage girl that wanted him? or did he rape her?? it's sooo hard to tell from those sites.. I'd just be careful like you should anyways.. don't run away if you see him but be cautious..

Do yourself a favor and gitcherself a solid lil set of brass knuckles or a lil switchblade to carry in your purse. If for nothing else, they are worth the peace of mind :)

Massachussets also has some fucked up laws dictating what a sex offender is. If a man gets pissing in the bushes it gets written up as "Indecent Exposure". I am an adult survivor of sexual abuse so I've educated myself on the statistics more often than not a person who is raped or sexually abused knows their rapist or abuser. That doesn't mean that stranger rape doesn't occur it is just rare.

Plus if he is unregistered you don't know for certain that he truly is a sex offender. I seem to remember in Massachusetts a bunch of people were tried and hanged because they were allegedly "Witches". Take a long serious look at the person who told you this about your neighbor. What kind of person are they? Are they down to earth to they have a level head on their shoulders? Do they gossip alot? Are they generally afraid of the world they live in?

I have long black hair and a beard, and I can be a little intense. Because of this at least once every six months or so people tell me I look like Charles Manson. I work as a caregiver in California and recently had to have a background check. Some people who used to work with my fiancee openly expressed concern about my ability to pass a background test because of this fact. I have no criminal record but the rumors that flew around that particular office had me tagged a violent criminal. It doesn't effect me but a rumor like that can ruin a life.

    Peace Out,
    Rev J

You are right about the peace of mind because that would be the only positive thing they would bring. They are both illegal in many places across america, where its a misdemeanor/felony to possess them, and a felony to use them. Using them with no skill is going to put you in a bad place come situation day.

that must be scary, what i would do is try and get my mom or dad to walk with me or stand by the house. Get pepper spray, not a knife.

The OP is 14 and lives in Massachusetts.

"It is illegal for pepper spray to be mailed to Massachusetts, but it may be lawfully carried by private citizens. Before it is is legal for any resident of the state to purchase the spray, however, you must obtain a Firearms Identification Card (FID). These are very easy to get: you simply request one at any local police station, fill out the required form and provide two separate types of identification. Every FID has a processing fee of $2, and takes about a week to receive"

Why? You don't know that he has actually done anything. And like someone said on here, you can get put on the sex offenders list for having consensual sex with someone who is under age.

Like I'm sweating over what laws I'm breaking when I'm going up against a rape machine... He'd be lucky if knuckles to the temple was ALL he got...

"Situation day" has come and gone and Knuckles haven't let me down yet ;)

Although, if the OP actually is that young.. then, I'd recommend waiting on following my advice.
