Just arrived in the mail today. Each page is divided in half, English and Mezcan. The Government is not helping matters by doing this. This is as bad or worse than having to press 2 for English on the phone. This is America, where English is our primary language, or used to be. Whatever happened to the time when in order to become a US Citizen, you were required to speak English? I am protesting all this Mezcan language stuff by not filling out the Census. It has already gone into File 13.

    HAHAHAHAHAHA.

English isn't the official language of the USA. Actually, the USA never had an official language, so it's therefore impossible that it was required to learned English before becoming a citizen.

Actually it is required to be able to read & write english to become a legal citizen.I knew a chinese dude who got denied because even tho he spoke & read english just fine,he couldn't write it.I hope he passed the second time around, cuz he was a hella cook lol.But for real tho, immigrants are expected to know the english language & U.S. history better than what our own high school graduates do.sad really. But to the original poster, the census form I got didn't have anything in spanish at all on it.Also,if you threw it out dude,I think there's hefty ass fines & possibly prison time for that.I know on mine it said it was required by law to fill it out.

My census form, which came yesterday, did not have any Spanish, IIRC.

Alright don't do the census, more money(literally) for us. Also, 10% of our country speaks Spanish at home, you live in a place where it's probably more like 25%, it's called being pragmatic, welcome to the present.

    *edit*
Just got mine, no Spanish anywhere on it, bet you wish you lived here.

My mom moved to the USA back in the 50's from Germany, and she was required, yes, required to be able to speak and understand English. But seems like the Government does not seem to enforce that anymore. As for the others who have received their Census and have had no Mezcan language on it, that is very interesting. I live in Las Vegas, and my census paperwork was half and half. Also, I never read anywhere where there is a fine or any type of penalty for not filling it out. And even if there is, it is my right to protest by not filling it out. If they want to come after me, they can either call me or ring my bell, but they will fisrt have to press 1 for English.

The 1950's was after the immigration act of 1924 but before that of 1965 when immigration was in fact highly restricted, fact remains your mother aside most people's grandparents were able to get into the country without knowing English or having more then 70 cents in their pocket and with nowhere to go. Only medical conditions kept people out of the country.

And actually no it's required by federal law to do the census, a census every 10 years is guaranteed in the constitution and executive branch of the government has the power to enforce the laws of the United States, and it is federal law that all Americans even those in prison must be part of the census. Deal with it.

"Oh god things are changing from 30 years ago!!" *goes and runs in basement and rants about government*

that's funny because my dad originally moved to america in the 50s and did not know a word of english, even when drafted into the American Army and sent to Korea.

Who said anything about "official language" besides you?
    He "OP" said primary language.
I believe they call this logical fallacy,

Impossible? No, English & Civics knowledge is required before becoming a citizen. All tho the test is fairly easy it is and always has been part of the naturalization process.

About 10% of Census forms are bilingual ,if you don't return it by mid April, they will send a census taker for a return visit, last time "2000 Census" follow up and return visits by census takers cost the US $1.5 billion.

    1. People complain government is too vast and intrusive, and wastes far too much money, then refuse to fill out census in protest.
    2. Government spends extra $2 billion having to deal with people who just couldn't fill out a piece of paper and mail it.

They're expected to pass a tests (written, oral) in English, however it's not required that they actually learn English.
