I left the big apple to go back to coach swimming in Pa. at 36 . smartest move ever... life can drain you if you let it. So don't!
Then dont fall into that trap. Of course Im young and still a bit naive to the finer points of adult life but Ive never let any preset ideals direct the course of my life. I dont aim to get into a good college and get a good job, I might apply for a music technology coursse as Ive always been interested in sound and have built a few rigs with my dad. If you want to travel, then do. Its a lot easier than people make it out to be. I travelled to the UK with a friend of mine to go to the Big Green Gathering festival last year. It was called off so I took the €200 that I made prior to going over there and we got the ferry to Calais. There we met up with some more friends of ours who were going to Sziget festival in Budapest and spent a month hitching Europe. We hitched for travel, camped for accomodation, washed in rivers and spent too much money on weed and mushrooms in the Netherlands We made money busking. For me, it was the happiest Ive ever been, it was truly what I wanted out of life. This summer, after my final exams Im doing the same. However Im going with three beautiful Hungarian girls that I barely know for the first month and then living in Hungary for a few months, working on a farm. After that I have no plans, I might go to Kathamndu to work for my friends charity in exchange for food. I might go to Czech after making some money and live cheaply there. Im going to take things as they come. I may not always be living comfortably but Ill be living freely, no rent to worry about, no petty nuances to drag me down into the mundane depths of modern society. Ill have the best and the worst experiences during the two years that I intend on doing this for but through good and bad, Ill still be doing what makes me happy, which I feel, is the most important aspect of life. Its all well and good to work your way up the economic ladder and owning a nice new car, a nice home with a wife and two kids but if youre not happy throughout this journey then whats the point in any of it? So you can die with lots of materialistic shit to pass onto your family? Passing on the memories and experiences of a well lived life is priceless compared to material posessions.
Thanks Im just tired of the stress people seem to force on themselves, I dont see the point in it. I love learning and I love feeling productive but both of those should be a joyous thing if its something you truly enjoy. Life cant always be a stress free ride all the time of course but stress should never be the main driving force behind life. It just takes a while to sit back and review yourself for a bit to realise what will truly make you happy. To go against this is to go against nature...another thing society is trying to take away from us.
Bad.Fish- you are living a richer life than most will ever know. I harbor a jealous admiration for you.
In other words, you have no direction in life and are destined to become a hobo either living on the lamb, or at the summer retreat on the corner of main and broadway in a cardboard box Hotwater
I was about to honor this quote and then address Bad.Fish as if they were two different people, but then I saw Bad.Fish wrote this too.....Man, you are one wise dude I have to say it. I fully agree with you that all that's needed is reflection, a time when you can prioritize your values and throw out the ones you don't need. As is said in the Big Lebowski, Bad.Fish, "keep on takin er easy for the rest of us sinners".
Gravity: A very significant thread. You choose the path you want in life. You can do the same thing that everyone else does and end up exactly where the majority of people do. 90% of people who retire are basically living in poverty, trying to make ends meet. Usually their meager existence is provided by a social security check from the government. That is the path provided by the governments, corporations and media. You are not taught to be bold, you are taught to play it safe. It will take a hell of a lot of intent on your part to make the life of traveling work for you. But you can make it happen. I have no idea what your degree is in, but it is easy to convert knowledge into money. No, I do not live in the grind. I sure as hell used to live there. There is a better path. But to step out on your own means owning your life. That is a hell of a responsibility. Because succeed or fail, it is all on your shoulders.
Really thank you. Im not wise though, Im young and idealistic. Those deas may turn out to be true one day but till then anything can happen, call me wise if I still old the same mindframe in ten or twenty years. Many things can change between now and then though...
