That is the line James Baker just gave in response to their being no 'leader' for the GOP. According to him, it doesn't matter who get's nominated to the post of leader of the GOP, republicans will automatically fall into line and vote for them... Wether that person was a mitt romney, or sarah palin (he said some others too). Did he miss the last election or is that just the standard 'the party is strong' type of line?
Probably a meaningful statement from his perspective and I have met many who's affiliations are blindly party oriented.
Well, from the perspective of anyone who paid even the slightest attention during the last election... the republicans lost... In part because a large segment of republicans did not like the ticket they were offered and so they stayed home instead. But hey... I'm all for this being the official line... it will keep them out of power for a long long time if they seriously believe it... lol
Given the fact that the democrats had the whole ball of wax and not been able to achieve any more than they have, the statement may indeed be accurate. In 2012 the republicans will tout "are you better off now than you were four years ago?" If the democrats are after more than one term, they have best get going. They are at bat and Obama has already mentioned the idea of being a good one term president. The democrats are fleeing from congress and even lost the kennedy seat after nearly 60 years. In 1980 the Carter administration thought it rediculous that the republicans would nominate an actor.
I think you underestimate the impact and impression bush left with voters... the last election, people voted for a person, right or wrong, the point is they weren't voting for a party. If Obama fucks this up (which I really hope he doesn't) I think you will be looking at a third party president next time.
It is hard do get a sense of the pulse of the public because that sense is most acutely influenced by our immediate surroundings. I live in a liberal enclave of the US and was jaw agape when Bush was reelected, so overwhelming was the local sentiment.
I'm a liberal in a rural ultra-conservative area. The sentiment I find here is that they are not for anything, but against everything that neo-con pundits preach to them about. Rush Limpbaugh is their mentor and Faux News is god's word. The education level is pretty low here, so anything with more than two syllables goes over their heads. I was on the local discussion board during the campaign and actually saw predictions that blacks (another word) would be rioting if Obama lost the election, or if he won. People were buying guns and ammo in anticipation of looting. It's the rhetoric coming from the Sarah Palins and the Republican party about "The Liberal Agenda." They don't know what it is, but it's going to bring the end of the world.
It's all just a silly little circus put on for the benefit of the masses, anyway. On some level most people are aware of it, too - but they'd rather have no voice and a comfortable life, so they just play along.
Sadly, it is. Even I voted Obama because I knew a Ron Paul write-in would have been a waste. I've learned my lesson.
Either vote was a waste. At least write in 'Megatron' so somewhere some guy reading the printouts will get a chuckle.
Ahahaha =D Nah, next time I'm voting for the best hopeless if I don't like either of the two hopefuls.
