... rooting for the bad guy in movies? I'm always a little disappointed to see the bad guy lose because I know it's the end of the fun of the movie. I just want to see the bad guy carrying out his plan to the height of it, but it's always cut short I'm always like, ohhhh man, him accomplishing his plan is going to be look so awesome... but nope, it's snatched away
Not necessarily. Sometimes. The fact that you're supposed to have some kind of passive-aggressive identification for "bad" guys turns me off. Manichean plots turn me off, period. I like films where good and bad intermingle (Taxi Driver, e.g.). What I do do quite often though, is laugh hysterically at scenes of violence, death, and insensitivity (usually perpetrated against "good" guys in the Hollywood formula)...when, everyone is like, crying. I've been expunged from theaters filled with drama and love-story fanatics for that very reason. I don't belong with cliche sentimentality anymore than manicheism.
I feel terrible while watching 'last house on the left' I was soo happy the good guys one and he saved his daughter but meanwhile I couldn't help thinking how sexy the bad guy was. Like attractive, and alpha male lol, total asshole tho. So yucky.
Sometimes. Like, I rooted for Vader, cause he was a bad ass. But I didn't like Palpatine, cause he was an old douchebag, not a bad ass - so the end of that really worked out for me. Interesting that King Kong was brought up, as that's one of the earliest examples I can think of the ambiguity that Cherea describes. (Modern remake makes man the straight up bad guy - original not as much.)
Godzilla, as he was the result of Man's abuse of Nature via. Industrial pollutants and waste. Hannibal Lecter (Especially in Hannibal), as he tended to eat the worst of mankind. Most of the cast from Goodfellas,,, I'm sure I could think of more but I have stuff to do.
How could anyone?! Nothing happens. Nothing. Not for over an hour. And when things do happen, they pale in comparison to just about every other modern horror film.
I was thinking mostly for the sake that the bad guy's get away. It is a bit of a rare thing, not counting the serial killer series like Friday the 13th and so forth.
Oh yeah, especially if the bad guy is a huge, city-smashing monster... Godzilla, King Kong, Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, the Blob, CLOVERFIELD! I always identify more with the monster and feel sad if/when it is defeated. They are just misunderstood Monsters need love too...
What about rooting against the protagonists in horror films because they're really annoying? Like Micha in Paranormal Activity. I didn't think that guy got killed hard enough.
I usually root for the underdog. Like if someone is trying to rob a bank I'll hope they can pull it off. The Usual Suspects had a great ending.
It's like the last Batman movie. The Joker just set out to prove how demented the world was. The 'good guys' in the movie caused a lot of disaster and showed a lot of heartless reactions. That scene where the hostages were in the building showed that point... basically, the movie set out to prove that Good isn't really good and that the Joker wasn't anymore crazy than anyone else... as well to prove that much of it is luck. *The reason why people like the Joker exists is because of people like the Batman* Nice comment
