i have this one lock right at my temple, which should really be two locks. there is another large one near it that should be two. so, i really want to rip the two monsters and make three locks. this is because i'm scared monster lock will become painful. anyone ever done this after a year? had a problem like this? help!
how locked are they? if they are really locked up together good luck! otherwise go for it and try, everyones dreads are dif
I had something I considered a monster lock at the base of my neck that was too big and made it so I couldn't really turn my head all the way...so I seperated the hairs as far as I could and cut the rest down the middle. It was a pretty solid dread for seven months or so and no hair was lost, so I consider that a success.

lol, that was not my intention. the first few inches of roots are not locks but, they seem like two locks. but, the rest of the tips are locked togehter. i'm afraid if i cut straight down the middle they'll just fall apart.
I had a few like that. I ripped them apart rom the root (where they seemed to be 2) down. I didn't use a razor or anything. They were a year and a few months at that point. It took about an hour per dread, but mostly because my fingers got sore.
yeah, exact same thing happened to me after a year. i separated the dread very slowly just by ripping individual hairs starting from the bottom and using a nail clipper to cut any unbreakable knots. the nail clippers are magical since theyre so small that its hard to fhcuk up your dreads too bad, so they wont fall off or anything, because scissors are often hard to work with due to their size and capacity to cut your whole dread off.
Looks like you can get two dreads out of that with a bit of time and a few pain killers, I'd say go for it
Yeah, you could totally do that. I always find ripping those suckers apart is easier after a hot shower. Which is probably bad for the hairs, but nicer on your hands and head, I find.
yeah i'd rip them apart - i've had to do it once and it did hurt a bit but both the seperated dreads are sweet now and haven't tried to eat one another again
you can definitely see where your hair wants to naturally separate. I say do it. I'd use my hands and when you get to toughspots, give it a snip snip snip. =) I've used scissors before and have not had any trauma to report.
this scares me. i dunno what i want to do yet. it isn't uncomfortable at this point. so i might leave it. because it's natty and wonderful.
It is a gorgeous dready. If you're concerned about it causing headaches later on though when it's even nattier I'd rip it now while you still have a chance. It looks like it'll rip.
