I love edemame, tofu, etc. and jut recently switched from milk to soymilk. I'm loving it, but a friend told me that soy and soybeans are actually bad for you, and numb your brain???
Complete garbage. Plus, we all know how the Asian Tigers far outcompete Americans in the education system.
when you go to extremes, yes it may be bad for you however, when not eaten in an extreme manner (ie. not the only food you are eating), you don't have to go out and avoid it at all costs...use some common sense and use moderation - not that hard when consuming foods from a variety of food sources and groups. now, if you have a thyroid problem, then you need to be careful...especially if you are on thyroid meds. moderation is key - again, common sense.
well beyond the fact that 99% of all soybean grown in america and something like 70% globally is GM,that includes what is labeled organic,(that in itself is enough for me to not eat any of it unless i grow it from heirloom seeds myself ) yes in the form of tofu it has been linked to premature brain atrophy. a simple google search will give you so much info it will make your head spin..
extremes? what's so dangerous about it? for a while I was on a big edemame kick, and while I like to snack on it occasionally, not so much anymore. I think soymilk is a great alternative to milk. While I'm not fully vegie yet, I feel good because I've been slowly weening meat (especially red meat) out of my diet. Its good for your body, good for the cow.

taking any nutrient to extremes can potentially cause problems. a moderate level of soy (20-25g per day) is fine. more is not always better just because somethign may be beneficial in moderate amounts. and if you think taking red meat out of your diet is good for you...then i say your crazy along with the rest of the veggies out there
your friend said this because there is a study that soy contains entrogen which is a female hormone. so if a man has to much soy and can lower his tosterone levels perhaps making him less masculine.
One would most likely have to have a significant amount to experience such negative outcomes. Consuming a reasonable amount regularly will definitely improve your health. Every healthy food can also be bad if you consume them the wrong way.
If all you ate was soy-based products then maybe you might develop some physical issue. But most likely, you're going to be fine. You are being paranoid. Don't listen to your friend unless he's a medical doctor.
Yea, taking meat out of your diet is most definitely not good for you at all. If you want to it's your choice, but don't trick yourself into believing you're doing it to benefit your physical health.
soya is just horrible to eat! according to "pastor" john hagee eating soya will turn male babies and young boys into homosexuals! well by that kind of logic, if you feed female babies and young girls meat they will turn into lesbins! :svengo: oh, some of the nutty ideals we mortals can dream up!
I like soymilk, but I find that almond milk has a better taste. I get the half gallon of almond breeze that they sell for 3 bucks in stores. I usually drink soy milk, because its cheaper though. I've seen it as low as 99 cents for a half gallon. Yah, I've heard that soy increases your risk of thyroid disorders, but I think it might just be because older women tend to eat more soy products out of health consciousness as they get older, and they tend to be a high risk group for that sort of thing anyway. There's a lot of myths behind health food.
