a curiosity... i was thinking of dyeing my hair (with commercial dye, not just henna) and i know it's been done before, but for those of you who do it, how do you keep the dye in? my hair holds dye somewhat poorly anyway (or maybe i'm just bad at dyeing it) but i can't imagine that it'll stay long if i keep using dr. bronners or a similar residue-free soap.

i thought of going to a salon but i couldn't imagine what would happen if i told the hairdresser to keep her scissors away from my split ends, and her conditioner and hairbrushes away from my hair!

If you could bring yourself to quit relying on shampoo to clean your hair every time, your dye will last foreverandeverandeverrrr.... Mine used to fade to shite within maybe 6 weeks. Now since washing rarely and usually with only water, it's actually come round to the time for another root bleaching before my dye has even started to fade properly (almost seems a shame! haha).

I have this problem too. I would wash with water only but I really like the smell of shampoos. I use a sulfate residue free apple one and only once a week and it still seems to strip the dye.

Maybe using water with essential oils?

hmmm... the internets do not seem to be a help on here... except to say that if you use dr bronners to dilute it (i currently just put it on my hair) and not to use peppermint dr. bronners, which i am using :) time to go back to lavender!

a thing of dye is only $7 or something, so i could reapply i suppose... i'm not comfortable rinsing with just water, just because i do a lot of exercising, etc. and want to get the ickies off my scalp/out of my hair...

i know there are people on here with lovely dyed dreads! moar input plz! :)

Just curious, what is the difference between boxed dye and the dye you'd get from the supply store?

dyeing now will probably raep your progress if you use any of that shit with chemicals, there are conditioners and fuck nose what in there.... so I say either wait and dye when you actually have dreads or resign yourself to the fact you may have to "start over"

That is true. My husband said my dreads smelled like dye and now I noticed if I rub my scalp it smells different.

Ah shit, I guess I learned my lesson for next time.
