Dude someone played me a Paul Oakenfold disk. What monotonus bullshit!!! They were like "This next track really kicks ass." The next track came on and sounded exactly like the last track. But that said I've learned not to write off the whole genre. I love Squarepusher But I still don't know the difference between Drum'n'Bass, Jungle, Psy-trance, Chill, Downtempo, and Lounge. I knd of dig the Trip-Hop I've heard. Plus there is a bunch of new stuff like STS9 and the Disco Biscuits (gotta love the Quaalude reference) mixing electronica in with the usual suspects in the jam band community. Peace Out, Rev J
juggalo= one who is obsessed with insane clown posse... who buys the products they endorse... and would describe himself as a 'wicked clown in the wicked carnival'. at least that's what i gather. i've never heard the wannabe rasta yuppies referred to as 'trust-afarians'... gotta use that i think it's pretty much the general consensus that scenester kids of any variety suck ass.
There is a huge difference especially between people who listen to EDM between alot of those genres, Alot of squarepusher's stuff is a f**ked up version of drum n bass. Drum N bass https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LupLZDMSVzQ"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LupLZDMSVzQ Psytrance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A95NaTkQfas"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A95NaTkQfas I'm a psyfan myself.
I don't think Phish is a particularly good band... in fact, I don't think they've ever written a single song that ever left any kind of impression on me. Seems to me most of their fans like them because they bill themselves as yet another reason to get high, and because it's super-easy to get drugs at their concerts. Lucky for the band, everything in the world seems more amazing when you're high... so all of their stoner fans bond over how great it is to be high together at a Phish concert. I sort of feel the same way about the Grateful Dead-- they're not very good. Not bad, but just sort of plain and uninteresting... except for the fact that their concerts are like open drug markets.
Never really got into phish so much but I can tell you about the Dead they are good of course not if you see them as "plain and uninteresting" I see them as "simplistic yet revolutionary" and I'm not quite sure where there this sentiment that "stoners take drugs and bond at concerts", personally im a little more sickened by people who stare in front of television and comment how "sweet the situation" is.. at least the music isn't materialistic, some people can't really understand that music can be just as influential as to what people do as "the situation" is at telling kids to get drunk and get buff, which if you haven't noticed is what every kids does now a days
pray tell, kind sir, what is your opinion of good? i mean, different strokes for different folks, right? i would agree with you that the majority of people on the lot at a phish show are primarily trying to just get fucked up, but don't discount the music. i understand you might not particularly care for it... doesn't mean it is devoid of any redeeming characteristics... i hate stevie ray vaughan, but that doesn't mean he sucks.
^ How can you hate this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWLw7nozO_U"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWLw7nozO_U It doesn't seem feasible if you have an inch of respect for the blues.
It's wild I think Phish did alot of Zappaesque brilliant shit on Junta. But honestly I like their indvidual side projects better like Vida Blue, Surrender to the Air, and Oysterhead. Also the films of Mike Gordon are unusual to say the least. Peace Out, Rev J
my feeling on stevie ray vaughan are that he is (while a very good one) pretty much a hendrix tribute kinda guy. the rest of his band blows. never meant to convey that he's no good... as i thought was evidenced in the latter part of my post... specifically, "but that doesn't mean he sucks" part. so, pretty much, you could say that i indeed have respect for the guy, but also that respecting something and enjoying it are two different things.
^ I agree with you to a point. I don't necessarily agree with the Hendrix thing - but I feel SRV's blues guitar is too technical, too generic and doesn't have a heart of it's own. It's amazing playing, but it doesn't have it's own life - it's just really skilled blues music - and what separates him from the true greats, is that no matter how good or bad they were with the instruments - their souls poured right out into the audience.
I will admit Hendrix was a huge influence on srv but if you listen to an srv album it sounds NOTHING like a Hendrix album, especially those studio ones hendrix released while he was alive. There's no psychedlia forays or pop rock songs with srv. Srv's band definitely played a backseat role early on but they all became very proficient and it eventually shows. I play guitar and I could never use the strings srv used, he used big ass gauged strings to get that signature heavy sound. There are stories of his fingers bleeding and like mid set he would dip his fingers in hot glue and pull fabric off his shirt and keep playing. I know that doesn't necessarily equate to good music but I hear the Hendrix comparison alot and besides him covering little wing and voodoo childe I don't find them all that similar.
We're on the other side of the argument as far as quality goes, but I couldn't agree with that part more.
This is off topic but I wanted to defend Jimi just for a sec... Duck, you are right in a way, there are a lot of life-less performances by Hendrix, especially since his family has begun authorizing the release of recordings previously never intended for repeat listening. out-takes and worse... Jimi quickly lost his edge when he began to realize most audiences just wanted to see him fuck his guitar, or light it on fire while playing his mega pop hits like Foxy lady, Purple haze. He became very apathetic and increasingly more and more drugged out. There are recordings that show his pure genius and the soul of a true blues man reaching for something higher, but there are a lot more that show his bummed out apathetic side. Anyone ever hear the unauthorized record "lets all get drunk and puke with Jimi Hendrix"? OMFG! It is very sad someone felt it necessary to show Jimi at his worst. To say he was generic simply shows your historical perspective. You must consider the time when Hendrix hit the scene and what was going on musically at the time. All the best acknowledged he was doing something, playing the electric guitar with a new approach. His riffs were not wholly revolutionary, If you know anything about blues rock guitar you can pick out his influences, but his approach was truly revolutionary and I have a feeling his influence will continue to be felt for many generations to come. Recommended recordings; Band of Gypsys Electric Ladyland Woodstock... PS Anyone who thinks SRV trumps Hendrix has no fucking clue and is likely not a guitarist or musician. ZW
Actually Zombie it wasn't Jimi's family putting all that Fucking Garbage Out. It was a fucking douchebag producer named Alan Douglas that kept puting these flaming bags or dogshit on everybodys doorsteps. After Hendrix's family got control of his recordings they stopped coming out. Peace Out, Rev J
I was talking about SRV not having soul, Jimi Hendrix was the king of soul. edit: reread my post, wasn't clear, my apologies
Ok, I must have re-read your edit then. Whew, I thought I was really loosing it for a minuet there...
