recently i finished going through 'the only astrology book you'll ever need' and made a bunch of notes about my natal chart. i want to look at past events in my life to find patterns or anything to help me understand those events and predict future ones, but i'm not sure how to do this. for one past experience i went to a birth chart calculator and entered the date of that event. i made notes about the similarities between the chart it gave and my natal chart. i entered the same time i was born for the event to match the orientation of the two. i'm really not sure what i'm doing any help?
Well I hate to cry "false advertising", but The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need isn't the only astrology book you'll ever need. I have over 100, but I regularly use about 5 or so. What you are describing is basically natal astrology in general. I'm a traditional (pre 17th century) astrologer, and according to those tenants, the birth chart shows all the major life events right there, except the timing is jumbled up. In other words the chart shows marriages, children, jobs, illness, etc in one place. You need to use various timing techniques to put them in order. Natal astrology is very complex and will take a lot of practice. One thing to investigate is the natures of the planets. The planets are the most important things in the chart. At least in traditional astrology, the signs modify a planet's nature, so the key is understand planetary nature to begin with. Next learn the houses. Next learn the signs. Next learn the aspects. Do NOT trust "cookie cutter" delineations most modern astrology books dole out. They sound nice, but they're very simplistic, and as time has gone on I've realized how little they really help. Astrology is the interaction of the things I listed above. It's like learning a language. There are no shortcuts.
thanks for your reply oh yeah, i realize that - that book just happened to be the best one i could find at the library and i found a .pdf version of it on scribd. it gave a great overview of how to use a natal chart, basics, etc. right. i'm interested in karma and how karmic seeds already formed produce certain results when given the right conditions, so i guess that's similar. i think i've done most of this (but not very in depth of course); i know what the 12 houses represent, what the signs are, and it's pretty easy to find aspects with a calculator. you mentioned using timing techniques to put events in order. can i look at a chart for a significant event in my life to find similarities between that and my natal chart or other patterns..? what techniques are you talking about?
There are a few. Modern astrologers mostly use transits and maybe solar returns. Traditional astrologers use those plus profections, firdaria, and primary directions. Profections are where each house represents a year. So, at birth (your first year) is the 1st sign, then your 2nd year is the 2nd sign, and so on. This is used to find the ruler of the year, which is the ruler of the sign. You don't use houses for this, but you start with the sign on your ascendant. For instance if your ascendant is Aries (Mars), then your 2nd year is ruled by Venus who rules Taurus. Firdaria is hard to explain, but basically each planet rules a certain number of years. This is period is called a firdar. Each is split into sub-firdars, so at any given time in your life, you are ruled by a planet and have another planet as a sub-ruler. Primary directions are even harder to describe. The basic idea is that you calculate how many minutes after birth a planet, planets, or other chart point rises above the horizon. 4 minutes of real time equals a year of life. The end result is you get a date for an event. To calculate these however, is very time consuming, and few astrological programs do them accurately. The are a few basic concepts - again this is traditional astrology. Your natal chart shows all events. Each planet carries the same meaning throughout your life as it shows in your natal chart. For instance, in my chart the Moon is linked to career for me, but in your chart it may not. When you use the timing techniques, you look to see if one or more planets is prominent over several techniques. If so, then that planet will be activated. Let's say the Moon is prominent in Firdaria, transits, and profections for April of 2011. I'd say for my chart something will happen in my career then. The nature of that event depends on the condition of the Moon, but that's the idea. I know this might be confusing, but that's my 5 minute explanation.
excellent. i think i can understand profections... i'll use one event to see if i can apply that: View attachment 44610 so there's my chart. one negative event occurred a little over a year ago. it was five days after my 21st birthday - so it was near the start of my 22nd year, the beginning of which was in cancer - ruled by the moon. i am a plutonian (i think - my pluto is in its dominion in scorpio and also in my first house), and my pluto is opposite of the moon. the timing of this seems to be between my midheaven and lilith, too. is this how i would go about using a profection? it was interesting when i looked at my chart this way after reading your explanation.
That chart is kind of hard to read since it's small, but the ruler for that year should be the Moon - 10th house Cancer. Your Moon is pretty well placed actually, since it's angular in the 7th and exalted. That in itself isn't bad, but then again profections should be used on their own. This basically gives an astrologer a starting point. The 7th not only rules relationships, but also rules enemies. I'd look for those two themes. Again, I wouldn't make a prediction on that alone. This has to be weighed with the other methods I mentioned.
i looked up some information on transits and solar returns, and i'll take a look at it soon. so the basic idea behind profections is that in a particular year of your life one of the planets has a heightened influence? it seems that profections and firdaria aren't used all that much in modern astrology - there are fewer resources.
They aren't used at all in modern astrology. It's a shame. You can actually do monthly and daily profections too. Traditional astrology rarely used one isolated technique for finding something out. Usually you use several and see if there's a pattern. It's a rather nuanced way of doing things and is difficult to teach. You have to practice on a lot of charts first. For instance for marriage, I barely even look at the 7th house. I also do men's and women's charts differently. Each uses different significators. I look at the significators, part of marriage for men or women depending, observe the positions of the ruler of the ascendant, and look for various afflictions and fortunes. I put all of that together for marriage. For birth I look at the 1st, 10th, and 11th houses and the positions of the Moon, Venus, and Jupiter. I also look at the rulers of the houses I mentioned. Again all of that goes together. The 5th rarely comes into play in delineating children for me. Basically it's an entirely different way of doing things.
how do you go from a yearly profection to one that's monthly or daily? i'm liking this profection thing
WHen you find the sign ruling the year, that represents your birthday month. Let's say Aries happens to be the ruler for the year. The next sign is the next month, and so on. The daily works the same way except each sign equals about 2.5 days.
great - i just have two main questions right now: here's a bigger version of the chart: View attachment 44613 1. it seems that i am a plutonian. what does the triangle between my pluto, sun and moon mean? 2. the calculator i used for this said that my north node is in my 6th house, but it looks like it's in the 5th. i'm not sure which to use, but the 6/12 combination sounds right, so i went with that.
Can you either post or PM me your birth info? It will be easier. As for you being "Plutonian" I only use the traditional rulers, but regardless, there are different methods for finding the ruler of the chart. The ascendant ruler is certainly important, but depending on what's happening, it can be trumped by other planets. In my chart, my ascendant is Sagittarius and according to most methods of finding the chart ruler, mine is ruled by Jupiter. However my Jupiter is weak and retrograde in a weak house. My Sun pretty much calls the shots in my chart since it's in Aries and angular. It looks like you're using whole signs houses, but there is something called a "5 degree rule" where if a planet is within 5 degrees of the next house's cusp, it can be considered to be in that house. That's what it looks like is happening with your north node.
I've been thinking about what exactly to type here. First of all I just want to make it clear that in order to predict what is going to happen with a birth chart, you have to have already thoroughly delineated the chart first. By this I mean you need to know if marriage is going to happen and how many times, children, career, and know what each of the planets are saying. Without this you can't predict through any technique. So, since I haven't really delineated your chart, I don't feel comfortable doing that. In order for me to do it, I have to spend a good deal of time with it, and that takes me a couple of hours at least. That's why I charge! Anyway, here are a few things to consider: The house system I currently use is Alchabitius which I think might change eventually since I am beginning to do medieval Arabic astrology which uses whole signs. For your chart I used Alchabitius. Your rising sign is Libra. Libra is ruled by Venus. Venus is at 12Pis55 in the 5th house. Venus in that degree is exalted, so is quite strong, though she's out of sect. The 5th is considered a benefic house. Generally if your ascendant ruler is strong, then that's a good sign for health. Now Venus is square Mars, so at some point (using the predictive techniques) you're going to have surgery. Generally looks good though. Some predictive technical info that you may not have access to easily: Firdaria - i.e. planetary periods: On your 20th birthday you moved into a Jupiter major firdar which will last until your birthday in 2020. This means Jupiter will be a big deal for these years. On Oct 12th 2009, you moved into a Mars minor firdar which will last until July 1st 2011 when the Sun takes over. Basically Jupiter is more important, then Mars right now. Both will be activated. Recent primary directions - Mars trine MC on March 12, 2008 The Sun moved into the bounds of Saturn April 7, 2008 Sun opposed the Part of Fortune on Aug 29, 2008 Nothing for 2010. Solar return - For your 21st birthday, your rising sign is Scorpio ruled by Mars. I'd think something happened negative financially sometime late in the year, but then again I haven't spent much time on this. The MOon is the ruler for the year with profections which on your solar return is quite weak. It's in detriment and in a weak house. The whole year was probably not pretty. A planet in detriment implies "dissolution". The Moon rules the 9th in your solar return and the 10th in your natal. Reputation, school, travel, that kind of thing would normally be affected in this case. Anyway that's my quickie.
awesome! thanks so much. right. you said before that in the natal chart you can find events and must understand it before arranging an actual sequence... in the past few weeks (partly thanks to you) i've become pretty motivated to study astrology in greater depth - if you only know about your sun sign it's not very persuasive or interesting that made me laugh - looks good! i had my wisdom teeth taken out, i think when i was 19, so hopefully that's the only surgery i have to worry about, haha. my 21st year was the shittiest i've had, you got that right lol. however, it ended well because some things were resolved and i moved back to my hometown. there was a major expense that came up later on, too. nice job! i'm going to spend more time looking through my birth chart and reading about transits. at some point maybe i'll know enough to ask in greater detail how you arrived to these predictions. i'm enjoying this hobby so far - thanks again for your input!
