I dont get it either... It is likely a need to feel validated, and part of something bigger than themselves. I never fit in with any groups in school, or since, and even the net groups I have joined instill in me no desire to conform to the herd. I love music, and am a big fan of lyrics. Dylan Lennon Peter Gabriel Jim Morrison Bob Marley and many blues greats... I always need to know the lyrics, and hate it when I cannot make even one word out. I have only read 'Generation of Swine' by Thompson, and I enjoyed it. He is a bit abrasive, but speaks with conviction and says much I agree with.
I agree with you, he just threw it together. Pasted a bunch of memos and letters together and a few short stories. It was entertaining, but it was obvious he did not put a lot of time an effort in.
I beg to differ... I think he nailed the performance. He was more convince than Bill Murray in Where the buffalo roam. Also the fact that he took some of those same mannerisms into his performance in Pirates of the Caribbean. Which I might add I also found very amuzing. But I suppose this is all just a matter of personal taste.
That's true, it is all about perception. But to that I'll offer Depp spent a LOT of time with Thompson during the process, on the Criterion Collection DVD version of the film there are a lot of extra clips and documentaries and such. Thompson and his wife both seem quite pleased/freaked out by Depp's taking on of the "character" of Raoul Duke. And you must keep in mind only half of that character is Hunter. The rest is his id gone wild. It is farcical, it is overblown.
