Back in the middle school punk days I was horribly disappointed when I found out that there was already a "Disgruntled Postal Workers"
Scapegoat was my band name idea. But I was outvoted. The name of our metal band is fish n' chipz. My friends are retarded.
Hmm, well I think you should take a slightly business approach if this is anywhere near serious; of course make it a name you like, but think about what kinda audience you want to attract. You really have two major options to aim for: Make a name that power metal fans will immediately identify as power metal-y - or make a name that a somehow similar market you want to steal from will recognize (for instance melodic metal fans.) What would be awesome is if you could come up with a name that's ambiguous enough to make people wonder exactly what it is, but specific enough to sound power metal-y. Guillotine for a new band sounds way too ___core to me, and you could have trouble finding your audience because of it.
^^Guillotine does sound hardcore.... and yeah i been thinking of a power metal name....but nothing...
I used to think that Under Black Sunshine was the coolest band name ever, in middle school. Sounds retarded now.
I suggest a huge brainstorm, focusing on names (regardless of which genre they sound like they belong to) you think are awesome, and names that are pretty cool, but also writing down good names just in case (the more you write, the more you'll think of, plus you could change your mind after looking at all the names in comparison) and then narrow it down only after the list gets wayyy too big. And again if you are the least bit serious about this, then try to find one that your potential audiences will like while narrowing. The other thing you could do is listen to a bunch of power metal songs, and pick out a lyric that makes you go "how fuckin power metal!", but wouldn't be immediately recognizable to the masses (cause you don't want them to think you're a cover band)
Well, there certain genres where it matters more or less to cater to your audience as far as names go, but most hard rock genres get pretty stereotyped even by the fans. The second part was a bit more metal I think =P Most any good metal song would have shitload of good band names in the lyric. The exception would probably be the ones without lyrics =P
