Looking for a portable stringed instrument to learn. I do have some prior basic guitar and piano experience. Some music i would like to play inlcude rehashes of pieces from Bach, jazz (if that is possible), gypsy style tunes, rehashes of Rush and King Crimson, and some gold old fashioned folk punk, or whatever. Which instrument would be more compatible with my musical aspirations? Mandolin would be nice, but i am wary of the possibility of theft. Ukulele would make me worry less about theft, but it seems like just anyone can play it, thereby diluting the respect and awe factor. I can't decide! Spare some advice? rettyplease:
Which one to choose ? - the one that speaks to your heart - this way you put your worries about theft (or how to gain respect and awe) into perspective. Like, a double bass is still a light weight for a dedicated bass player.
I play the ukulele. It's the kind of instrument, that can sound either madly melancholic or madly euphoric. I have never touched a mandolin tho, so I guess I can't really help you much.
ay, thanks. Ill probably go with the Mandy. I just wonder if it would be possible to play one with a classical guitar style fingering techniques.
Get one of those mini Fenders and tiny amps. That sort of would be awesome. Otherwise, I say the Ukulele, but only because I own and sporadically play one.
Ukes have limitations that come into play before mandos' limitations come into play. Really, with guitar experience, you could take a few classes and rip a mando fairly quickly. Ukes sort of teach you. I do have respect for both instruments, and I have played ukes with amazing versatility of tone. (I was production team on two ukulele festivals in Colorado) With either instrument, go for a used higher end instrument over a cheapo new one. And nothing but nothing wrong with playing both.
