Was the earliest known piece of literature. I chose this from a list of books to write a research paper on (I got an 86% on the paper). I was surprised to find myself actually enjoying it. It reminded me a lot of the Bhagavad Gita and other Hindu stories and myths that I've read a few years back. Has anyone else read it?
Dear Principessa, I had bought the book more then ten or fifteen years ago. But at that time I was a weak man... Meanwhile the epos is extended with further translated text fragments (and I got stronger ;-)). Should I give it a second try? Should I buy a new edition? Regards Gyro
Definitely. Well, I have this edition http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Gi...e/9780743261692/?itm=6&usri=epic+of+gilgamesh
I have never read it, but I certainly want to. I knew of it for some time now and I look forward to reading it. Sounds good from your words.
Care to back that up? Maybe you didn't pay attention in English class and that is why you are incapable of articulating yourself and your opinions, and think one-liners will be clever enough to suffice. It isn't being taught in literature classes most likely because it's not as well known as other works like Shakespeare and Sophocles. I'm surprised it isn't being taught since it's the earliest known work of literature found. In my opinion, it's great to teach history, literature in the form of the first epic poem ever written (which was probably what inspired great future epics such as The Iliad and Beowulf), and mythology all in one lesson.
how does one back up a clever one liner about how great this literature is to someone who misinterprets it? I meant, it is good and that is why it is taught. Im sorry that you are so defensive that you misunderstood what i meant and jumped my shit by making assumptions that are totally created in your own imagination about my education, motivations and what I think when you dont know me. Perhaps i could have made a "more articulate post" but then I wouldnt know what a petty name caller you are when you think someone has a different opinion than your own. Now we all know. Sometimes less is more, but you certainly gave plenty. Hows that for a witty comeback? Enough detail in that one for you? ty and have a nice day
'Tis a good epic, among the earliest known, but there are other Mesopotamian writings i dig more - such as Enki and the World Order, and the whole Inanna/Dumuzi mythos.....Sumerian literature is just some good stuff!
I never called him one name. I was merely stating what I saw. I just made this thread for people who liked the book. Simple as that. Psychedelic goddess- How was Enki? I have heard good things about that one. There is something unique about Sumerian literature. It's not commonly taught but it should be! I'll keep this in mind if I ever become and English teacher. Of course they go by a curriculum, but suggestions can be made.
Hello, I enjoy this thread. I'm really surprised how many people are interested in this sort of literature. I felt a little bit like a freak the time I bought the book . Regards Gyro
here is my link for Enki and the World Order: http://www.mindspring.com/~mysticgryphon/enkiord.htm it has such a beautiful, lyric quality to it - (remember, most of these tales were sung) enjoy!
Me too! I was surprised that I even enjoyed it. I suppose some find it intimidating and won't think they will understand it. But most of these have been adapted into new versions that are easy to read and comprehend. You, my friend, are no freak. And if you were then so am I. Awesome! Thank you
Dear Principessa, ah, yet another opportunity to start a club. How about 'Freaks International United'? And you and me are the ueber freaks who started the thing . Regards Gyro
