Howdy ya'll. College undergrad from Michigan here, and was looking for some relatively cheap accommodations for some music festivals over the summer. After some consideration, I decided that there would exist no temporary structure better to smoke a bowl in than a good ol' yurt.

I've been looking at a few instructional sites to get some basic information:

Probably going to build myself an eight footer or so. I've been trying to figure out some ways to cut down on material costs, and came up with a few. Instead of buying dowels or pre-made slats, I'm probably going to buy some standard lumber, preferably from sustainable sources. From there, I'll use a hand saw to cut the lumber into slats, five feet long, half inch in diameter, inch wide. To save on canvas, will likely buy in rolls from either a textiles store or army surplus.

Well, that's what I've got for now. Anyone have any recommendations, or experiences with these majestic dwellings?

I love yurts!! would like to build one myself one day, but something more permanent. although something temporary to throw up at festivals is an awesome idea. If you're ever in the western north carolina area, theres actually a yurt commune near pisgah national forrest that hosts diy workshops. you pay for the materials, take the workshop over the weekend, and go home with a yurt. not sure of the cost though, the way you're doing it sounds pretty budget friendly.
