I'd like to make the world a better place. I'm not entirely sure how yet, but I think we should all get together somewhere... Kind of like a really big event, and figure out something to do. Things need to change and I'm sure a lot of "non-hippies" think so too. Let's do this:)

Unfortunately there is no big event that can change everything. A lot of us thought that being at Woodstock in 1969 would change everything. It obviously didn't. The best you can do is change those things that are within your power to change. If enough people do that then everything will change. A good way to start is simply to treat everyone the way you want to be treated.

May I give an example, which is not an explicite hippie but rather an environmental event. Anyway, it sucessfully aims to making the world a better place.

It is the Streetlife Festival, which takes place twice a year in Munich. Initiated by an environmental activist group called Green City, more than a mile of main streets in the city are closed for traffic during a weekend, and numerous activities take place. I have been contributing a popular barefoot park for the last five years.

Around, there's music, dancing, cabaret, street sports, presentations of social and health issues, protecting nature, environment, climate -- all kinds of things that may make life better.

People can get informed about electric cars .....

    animal protection .....

or are interviewed about their opinion on Greenpeace .....

Every time up to 300,000 people visit this festival and get lot of motivation for sustainable lifestyle. You can find further pictures in the galleries section of my web page -- if you are interested, please follow the link in my profile

    Peace & love,

    Lorenz

Although having huge group activities aimed at bringing attention to issues is great and all, they have been done, and things rarely change from it.

The reason this is, is that after they happen, everyone sits back and goes... okay, we've done that, and sits back and waits for something to come of it, or the next 'big' rally...

If you want to change things, do it... don't wait for others to join you... go and do it... all by yourself if you have to.

As an example. during the time in ontario when the ontario supreme court ruled our marijuana laws unconstitutional, and struck them down a year later, there were lots of gatherings and rallies to get the laws fixed. Instead, they were replaced with laws that pretty much just kept the status quo...

Admist all these rallies though, the cops in quite a few places were still enforcing the old laws, as if what the courts said didn't matter. That includes around here.

One day, they rolled up on some buddies of mine who were about to roll a joint, confiscated their weed and told them they would consider laying charges (which they couldn't). My buddies, rolled over and took it with little but a whimper.

I freaked... I talked to everyone I knew who toked (quite a few people) and said let's do something... but nobody was interested... Various reasons were given... job security, public opinions of them, etc...

So I rolled bunch of joints, called the two local papers, explained what had happened and told them I would be in the local downtown park later that day and would like it if they met me there.

I told eveyone I know, and said, come on out, lets do this...

NOT A SINGLE PERSON BESIDES MYSELF SHOWED UP...

So I say in the park and talked to the reporters and had my picture taken while smoking joints at the picnic table and explained why what the cops were doing was wrong. The story started on page one of the paper, continued to page 2 with a 3x5 picture of me toking away.

The cops never bothered a single person in this area again, until after the new laws came into effect...

One person, standing up for their rights will do more then 10,000 talking about it...

You want to change things, DO IT... even if you have to go alone...

  6. Big change comes by a succession of small changes. Everyone doing what they think is right. Lead by example brother and hopefully people will take notice.
