Hello, I have been looking all over to find a question forum for dreads and hopefully I have found it :) well anyways, I have had my dreads for 3 weeks now and I thought they were doing fine; well I went swimming and now all the roots are quite loose and unraveled. I have a picture. Some of the unraveled roots are even 3 inches down my poor dread! I dont know how to fix this and would truly appreciate some help with this. Maybe I am worrying too much? I have a tendency to do that.. Feel free to ask me for the pics

Well thats your problem right there, and I'm afraid it's going to take 6 months to a year to fix.

3 months is NOTHING. Your dreads will unravel and re-knot themselves with time. It takes about a year or so. Whats happening is normal. Relax. =]

Your at 3 weeks? Expect them to get even worse during the next 2 months. Then it will get slightly better.

They won't look "decent" until somewhere around 6 months. It will take a year for them to look like "real" dreadlocks.

You have a looooooooooooong way to go. But as long as you just don't touch your hair it will work.

This isn't entirely true. Some techniques, like root-rubbing, seem to help for some people. Mind you, it might not do anything good at all, but it won't stop your dreads from "working". Some people just take a hardcore no-touchy approach to their dreads. Indeed, sometimes it seems like some "neglect" practitioners are more worried about stuff "being done" to their hair than people who backcombed, maintain etc. There isn't anything wrong with going complete freeform: it definitely works, and makes for sick dreads, but isn't the only way.

I'd say that patience is the most important factor, but I would experiment and see what works for you: root-rubbing may help. On the whole, I just wouldn't over maintain. And again, for some, that means none at all, for some it means not more than say, a half-hour per day.

Point of ramble: try a bunch of different things, and figure out what works best to get the dread-look you want.

Also, what method did you use to start, if any?

    And welcome to hipforums;)

    yes it is.

If you don't touch your hair your hair will dread. Sure, there's things that could make it faster. But if you just don't touch it, it will still work.

Yes, it will definately work. I just percieved it this way, as you said: "as long as you DON'T TOUCH your hair it will work", which sounded to me like it meant if you do touch your hair, it won't work.

Itsall good itsall good, my perception, that's all

I don't really consider weed a drug, I kinda group it in with alcohol, but I don't really do it anyways.

    drugs are still for thugs!

Thanks for everyones responses, I was just freaking out about nothing i guess. The method that I started with was backcombing and I did use wax. I do touch my hair though, I palm roll it often and I think that is helpful. I am working on pics : )
