I'm a writer and I'm working on a project that involves Ectogenisis-- growing babies full term in vitro. In other words, taking you ovum and your chosen father's sperm and growing a baby in an artificial womb at will. No pregnancy, no possibility of genetic defect. Obviously, there are economic, health, moral, and political implications. Opinons? Conjecture? Interest?
That's frickin weird. I suppose it will be illegal at first, then eventualy it will be legalized, and later be considered normal. I personaly wouldn't want my kids grown in a lab, but I'm in no position to judge. Either way, it's an interesting thought.
Why wouldn't you want you're kids grown in a lab? ------ I'm totally non-judgemental here. I should probably say that I'm a screenwriter in Hollywood and this is a project for the studio system. You can believe there are compelling characters, a riveting plot, and a twist that will shock the crap out of you. But it's also a chance to bring thought on something that will "later be considered normal". And, after all, I've got thousands of post on Hipplanet. Alas, it humbles me to say, but we men are simplistic on the issue. Women are much more complex; the implications are much deeper. Some of the real benefits are obvious: No interuption in your life-- just a big bounus. But that's nothing. The ability to bring children in to our world in the chociest of circumstances. No more MS, Autism, etc. Most women who cannot bear children produce fertile eggs; Infertile couples would become the rarest of the rare. Abortion would lose it's political immediancy as an issue. Most cancer-- gone. What's missing for the mother is obvious. But what's misssing for the child? A Mothers Heart beat? Simulate it! A meta-physical connection? And the elimination of genetic disease implies gentic engineering. So I'm just looking for points of view. What do you think?
i think theres a mother child bond you may be overlooking. my son simply wont snuggle comfortably with daddy, but i can curl up with him just fine. there is a nesting and preparing in mid to late pregnancy that is hormonally instigated, and gets you ready to care for the baby. what about breastfeeding? i wouldnt want to have to chemically induce lactation, and we already know breast is best, i dont think that can be properly simulated. then look at the population growth complication. with all the 'hot lil mamas' able to have children without the stretchmarks, with all the infertile couples skipping over the adoption option entirely. i personally feel that the increase in infertility is a natural process. the human gene pool is full of turds, some are recessive, some are dominant. but eventually nature will clean it. i think we tamper with the life process enough as it is. personally, i would be against it. it would only be a halfstep from total government control. what are you worth if they can kill you and replace you. what are you worth as a woman, who could be abducted, harvested for eggs and then discarded? it sounds like bad juju to me.
