i like never wash my hair. my dreads started happening when i was backpacking. part of my head is crazy natural and the other part is twist/rip method. ive only had them for about two months officially, and ive only actually washed my dreads once, about 2 or 3 weeks ago with this cheap sauve shampoo... i didnt like it.. the most i normally do is just drench it in hot water and then blowdry.. sometimes if the scalp is real oily i use a bit of baby powder. anyway, i love my locks and they are looking really great, but i feel abnormal because i like never wash them. is it strange that i find the smell of my hair grease comforting? okay anyway, im sure there is another thread on this, but i just didnt have the patience to look through... so whats a nice natural way to clean them? because all the ones online are expensive and i cant find shit for dreads at any stores... please help me out.. thankyou
loooots of threads on hair washing stuff, but the general winner for cheapsie stuff is Apple Cider Vinegar and Bicarb Soda I think. And I'm sure there's weirder things to find comforting than greasy hair ^^
How often do you shower? Have you heard bicarbonate of soda? Rad locks take laziness AND patience... I suggest you find some.
Yeah it is, water is fine to wash your dreads with, but not washing at all... Just read the faq at the top of the page, the section about shampoos etc. Failing that use baking soda. Best thing there is.
You should wash them more often... It might not bother you but it might bother people around you... If you don't wanna fork out for the dread soaps or bronners make up your own mix..... theres quite a few different recipes on here you can try
whether or not i had dreads, I couldn't wash my hair that often anyways.. if you like.. put a few drops of tea tree oil in the water that you drench your hair in.
When its cold it sucks to wash dreads I just do 3/4 Cup baking soda grapefruit and lime juice tea tree oil and sea salt sometimes Witch Hazel and some ACV when I need to cleanse em
i do mine in 3/4 cup bicarb soda, 2 tablespoons salt, 2 tablespoons lemon juice and 8-9 drops of tea tree oil - mix it all up in the hottest water you can stand then soak your dreads in it till they're all nice and wet all through, wrap your hair up in a towel and leave for at least half an hour, or until the itchy kinda feeling settles down, then rinse out i barely ever wash my dreads either... i probably wet them once a fortnight and deep clean once a month/bimonthly if i get really lazy. no one ever tells me they smell, if i feel like they might i run some essential oils through them and it's all sweet i only shower every 3-4 days as well though... which people say is 'gross' but i have never once been told my BO is an issue, and i have honest friends showering once a day in a country that is in the middle of the biggest drought on record is just plain fucking wasteful IMHO (i live in australia) ETA: there's way more chance of getting mould in your dreads the more you wet them anyway... the people i know with the smelliest dreads wet them every day and they never dry properly hence mould
I'm lazy about washing my hair, especially in the winter. About every few weeks, and only if they start to smell and I'm worried about getting the stinkeye on the bus. Typically, when I can smell my head, and if I'm not liking the scent, then I wash. I like to use just water though. I like the smell of just hair. It's clean and non-chemically! It's kind of the same as comfort hair grease! Don't feel strange about not washing that often. As long as you aren't a total unhygienic mess, you are A-O K!
washing dreads in the cold is awful. it took mine a solid day and a half to fully dry. hair dryer is a good idea. I think you're fine as long as you wash with water every week or so, just try scrubbing them around a lot and rubbing your scalp when you do the hot water thing. last summer when I didn't have access to showers I would just dump cold water over my head and rub my scalp a bunch, then shake like a doggie. I like Nature's Gate products as far as shampoo goes... their chamomile shampoo is to die for.
I've used just plain water for the last 2 months no issues. Surfing/salt water twice a week helps with the oils I reckon
ive usually liked to think that i wash my dreads every few weeks, but for the past year or two that probably hasnt been true,,,its weird, they dont seem to get dirty, sometimes like 2 months or so go by and they still feel and smell wonderful. no grease at all. i still like how they feel after washing though and i wash for my scalps sake
i wash my locks once in four months with pure watter nothing else and they do not smell so dont wash your hair if you do not like it
