hey. does anyone have any good surf rock bands or songs that they would reccomend me giving a listen to? all i really know is like Misirlou, and a few beach boys things, but i don't even know any specific song titles by them. and then like Agent Orange, which is more surf punk than anything.
Some 13th floor elevators songs are kinda surferish but, I dunno, thats tough. Try Street Song and maybe if you like that other 13th floor songs may be cool. Though, Surfer music is a strange concept.
Some good songs in this old thread: http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=264189&highlight=surf&f=269
I don't think it's surf but one of my former favorites is The Pixies. They had 5 big releases, the best are ones up to debate but I think Doolittle and Surfer Rosa would be good starters if you persue them. The members solo works came out good as well. Look for Frank Black, Frank Black and the Catholics, The Breeders (the early albums are better than the popular commercial breakthrough works). Happy listening.
It depends on what style of surf music you like. For a pop music surf sound, "The Beach Boys", or "Jan and Dean", might be what you are looking for. If you prefer a more rock music surf sound, "The Ventures", "Dick Dale", "Jerry Cole", "The Challengers", might be what you are looking for. If you like surf music with more of a techno sound, "Man or Astroman?", might do. And if you like a more Psychedelic surf sound "The Mermen", or "The Shi-Tones", might be it. I have a couple of links for free downloads or streams from "The Mermen" and "The Shi-Tones", I'll share here... http://www.archive.org/details/mermen2003-01-03.shnf http://www.archive.org/details/shi-tones2006-11-02.flac16 The site has a large live music section with many other bands available for free downloads/streaming
A new style surf-ish rock band that I came across is Wavves. I don't particularly like them too much, but that's just my taste. If you're into that kind of music, then you might really dig them.
I figured I'd spread the word, though, because I seem to be one of the very few around here who actually don't like them. Haha.
