Recently, I have found the longest song I have ever seen. It is a recording of Dickey Betts at Winterland on 12/14/1974 doing In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. This version clicks in at an amazing 41:19. Here is the members of the group he was with at the time: Dickey Betts - guitar, dobro, vocals Jeff Hanna - guitar Spooner Oldham - organ Vassar Clements - violin John Hughey - pedal steel guitar Oscar Underwood Adams - mandolin Stray Straton - bass, vocals Bonnie Bramlett - vocals, percussion Jerry Jumonville - alto sax David Walshaw - drums, percussion Jerry Thompson - drums Leon Poindexter - acoustic guitar Walter Poindexter - banjo Frank Poindexter - dobro
I guess either is acceptable. Lets just say as long as it was recorded and able to listen to it today. My pick is available at Wolfgang's Vault, free to listen to.
i forgot what it's called unfortunately, but there is this composition being written that they plan to keep going for centuries. The plan is for people to be constantly playing and composing it..i think the projected full length is like a thousand years Thank you Google! It's called longplayer: http://longplayer.org/
Thats pretty cool, and I wasnt aware of it, and thank you for that, will give it a listen from time to time, but lets re-define the rules to a song played by people, and not a computer.
thats understandable Sleep - Dopesmoker (63:32) Ossein - Opal Sativa Part 1 (56:53) Bill Evans - 1st Movement (Moderato, Various Tempi), B (41:09) Acid Mothers Temple - Starless and Bible Black Sabbath (34:30) Longest songs in my music library excluding mixes.
Now thats what I am talkin about. Now listening to Dopesmoker. 9 minutes into it and it is interesting. But I am afraid this one could get old after 15-20 minutes, unlike Elizabeth. And as I say that, the jams start to kick in, and a bit of a difference happens. Still interesting at the 17 minute mark. Now at 25 minutes, and gotta say the novelty has worn off and now getting somewhat boring. Ok, couldnt make it past the 29 minute mark, just to repetitive and boring. Let me see if I can find Ossein. Foud 10 minutes worth of Ossein, but that was more boring than Dopesmoker, lol. NEXT?
Definitely not the longest song out there but there's a thirty minute long version of 'Dazed and Confused' on that 'Song Remains The Same' album that Zeppelin put out. Unless I'm mistaken, the Dead have played full shows where they only did one or two songs. So I'm guessing you can find something pretty lengthy from them.
Dopesmoker is the longest I know of hehe. I can imagine it gets boring to some though. You have to be in the mood to listen the whole thing but it has great vibes (not in the least from the lyrics that, however quite hard to understand by listening, do fit the music)
Thick As A Brick by Jethro Tull is long, but not the longest. I saw Phil & Friends play a 45 minute version of Dark Star at the Warfield in SF two years ago...
Check out most of Devil Doll's discography... They're pretty long... But the winner has to be Anata's I Sit and Listen to the Rain as my Mind is Wandering....
