Me and Madd were going back in forth in the PM's a couple weeks back, and during the convo this part (above in quote) caught my eye.

If what he says is true.. a Private Message isn't really a Private Message eh?

    Can somebody clarify this?

From what I've seen\understand, yes, they can, have, and do.

No - moderators can not read private messages (well except their own).

That's not cool. It kind of feels like when somebody is reading/opening your mail, and you not knowing anything of it. Or ease dropping in on a phone call, and not having a clue. Thought the whole point of a private message, was that they were PRIVATE. lol

    Weird.

When you ask a question, don't miss the answer ;)

If not - it is as you believe, and there's not much we can do about it.

While admin at another site I had that capability. Slimy and rude to use it, though. But on a site this huge and busy, I doubt anyone would bother.

    Hi,

as well as email and most other systems this is an unsecure medium to exchange messages through. Use an approbiate encryption scheme if you want to be sure nobody except the recipient reads or modifies your messages.

Mods here can't. Still, unless someone was being particularly troublesome and could potentially be doing something with legal ramifications, why would anyone bother. Honestly, your pm's aren't nearly as interesting to anyone else as they are to you. Just remember, you're not really that important.

I'm sure it is within their power to do so, I am also sure they wouldn't bother to do so unless it was required for them to fully perform their duties - which is highly unlikely.

That is bullshit, I'm that important and more.

Heh. Just remeber never to say anything in a pm that would hurt you to have made public.

i can only remember it happening twice...

once was when a pm box in the chatroom got accidently closed, and an admin helped the person retrieve the convo... which was nice of them

the second on forums when some naughty people were using the pm system to link for a "rival" messageboard when the UK forum here went a bit tits up

the capability is there, but i don't think we need to start using enigma codes and bejesus knows wot else..... i can't see anyone having the patience to wade through the detritus this place creates behind the scenes....

    Hi,

you might be right, but you will never know for sure ;).

The point to take away from this thread is, that there is no such thing as private or personal mail at forums.

    Regards

    As a mod...

I am reasonably sure that we cannot read PMs- I really haven't looked for a way though as that isn't something I'd be particularly keen on doing. The thing is that if you're going to believe that we can peek in on your private communications then there's little I can say to change that.

What? You don't think the chatter between strangers you care little to nothing for is enthralling? So many egos will be crushed. We do like to think were more worthy.

    Hi,

if I use PM I care for one way or the other. I might be strange, but I won't even put my email address into a PM, but use a generated one time address instead. And from time to time I want to contribute to a thread, but I feel that some words should not be told in public, so PM becomes approbiate. In such case I don't want to have to fear that the words spread from a friend to a friend to a friend etc. And then there are third parties that might be interested in some things that are discussed via PM I guess.

Remember, I don't say our mods sniff the PM, I only say PM is not a private channel to exchange messages.

    Regards
    Gyro
