So the time is coming up pretty quick here for me to break the news in regards to what I plan to do to my hair... that is dreadlock it... However my parents are fairly conservative and I find myself dreading (HAR HAR HAR) the idea of explaining my intentions to them. I'm moving out within the year, far far away to beautiful Vancouver BC, but there is still going to be a period of time that they will have to "deal" with myself and my dreads... So I am wondering what your story is? What happened, if anything, to you when you let your parents know? Whether or not you lived with them at the time. And, how did you tell them? Thanks in advance :)

First they were annoyed, then they ignored the whole thing and now they have resigned themselves. It might be rough at first, but hopefully they will be able to accept you, I wish you luck :)

Ha, I AM the parental unit with dreads. I wish I could offer some "great" advice. All I can think of is, I will never in 10,000 years understand why so many parents are so controlling. I definitely understand if there are health issues involved (drug & alcohol abuse, unsafe sex, etc.) - but HAIR? *shrugs*

Yeah, my mom couldn't really say too much because when she was young her mom forced her to get this awful permed haircut that my mom hated. So she told me that I could have any hairstyle I wanted no matter how much she disliked it.

I can tell that she wants to tell me to cut them off, but she resists

in my case it was usually like so in all hair issues, except having long hair

dad: what the fuck did you do to your hair... again!?!
    me: ummmm
dad: dumbass or any synonym take your pic
(the above text was translated and has lost some of its meaning)
and thats about it, then I get slight jokes about my hair for about a month and then all is good

You haven't mentioned your age and if you rely on your parents financially.

    hahaha

    mine is similar to enjoys
she didn't notice anything until i was about 9 months in, then
    "are they real?"
    "yea"
    "oh, tidy your room"

if you consciously dread telling them, they'll sense that there's something negative about it, which there obv isn't :)

My dad thought it was awesome when I told him.

My mom didn't have a problem with it as long as I keep them tidy and clean.

Those were my instructions as well, and I fully intended to do so,
but both parties (parents and me) stopped caring and here I am.

mom was pissed! told her on the phone after about a month after starting. she thought I was going to get beaten up or something for having them in Montana.

almost 9 months later and she has already grown to like them when I tie em back.

Yeah, I complete forgot to take care of mine lol.

I used to fix them up once every few days.... Then once a week... Then I went like 3 months without touching them..

I think I'll tidy them up once or twice a month for now on. It makes them look nice and it won't hurt the progress. And It's not even hard work to do. I just smoke a bowl and listen to music and touch up my hair.... It's kind of like being a girl but without all the rainbows and unicorns.

My father's side of the family constantly wants me to either use conditioner (WTF?) or get them "re-done".

My mom loves them, but the rest of my family on her side are from out in the country (Manitoba) and think it's funny 'cause they're not used to guys with long hair.

I'm only a baby, 19 years old lol. But I depend on them and I don't... like I'll eat food if they give it to me but as far as everything else goes I pay for myself. I did recently lose my job but it looks like I'll be picking up a warehouse gig soon here so thats all right. Also they did say that they will help pay for my school tuition next year but I'm paying for most of it and can already afford around a year and a half on my own so no real problems there lol.

Theres nothing we can say xD
You know your parents better then us and only you can really have any idea how they will react.

My dad hated me getting dreads but I gave up caring what they said long ago xD He now actually admits that dreads suit me so its all cool

it sounds like you still rely pretty heavily on your parents.

it would be kind of stupid to throw away school on their dollar and a place to stay for having dreads. theres always time after you really are self sufficient and you can piss them off without consiquences.
