eace: So basically I was born in 92' but I my brain is in 69'. Everyday I daydream of how rad it would be to go to woodstock or haight ashbury in the 60s but I know the era is slowly dying. My generation doesn't appreciate the idea of a 'counter culture' like I do. Will we ever bring it back or will it take another major shithole of a problem caused by our government to create a great revolution? eace:
What happened in the 60s will never be recreated it was kind of a social perfect storm that just happened. Thats not to say that each generation doesnt have there own special times that will also never be recreated. And keepers of the flame will always be welcome to challenge the status quo.
No it will never come back, the youth of today don't have it in them, they have joined the ranks of the Sheeple.. Peace
do you think the hippy community is going to die anytime soon, I mean it's still somewhat alive in small liberal cities and the northwest, not to mention the rainbow gathering draws in like 20,000 freaks a year (correct me if i'm wrong). I'm from conservative bible thumping nowhere land. If I were to hit the road would I find other free spirited heads like myself?
The Spirit Never Dies. As we walk into the next phase we continue to be. It is not what is on top of your head it is what is inside your head that makes you what you are. It is The Spirit that moves us, we were living in the NOW, we made changes for our childrens sake. We rattled walls and show'd ppl what they were doing to the eareth and to generations to come. I dont think we had a choice, I believe we were born to accomlish it. We Did what we were 'called' to do. There are ones being groomed to take the firestick when the time comes. Ppl are no longer looking through glass darkly. The light has been cast upon the darkness and it is Today, right now, that minds should be learning from. Blessings on your journey sh
na its not gonna die. mushrooms are too easy to find. cowshit and whatnot. besides some of the smartest most cappable people i know like to trip and im sure there are more out there that keep a low profile cause thats the only way to do it. if you want this shit to come back and get legitimized you gotta be more successfull and more responsible than average sheeple. dont fuck up. keep your job. do something worthwile. be responsible. have some couth. if psychs are so great and edifying you should be leading the country. right? the op is like 17 right? hes got his whole life to expand his mind (assuming that 2012 is bullsht). if he is smart he will lay off the drugs till hes gotten through colledge or atleast untill hes set up financially. thats what im doing (cross my fingers). here is the answer to your question. if you can have a real life and keep a job and keep on trippin then yea YOU can make it come back. but if you dont, if you ruin your life, then no, it fucking wont. its your choice. make it happen whatever the cost. become a ceo of a fortune 500 company and when you go on your 2-6 week vacation every year, stock up on the aya and mush. then when you retire you can write a book about how your life was so much better and more fullfilling than any other ceo because you were tripping your balls of and getting high in your spare time. you gotta MAKE the world accept you and your trippy balls.
thanks for the advice guys. I agree that to kick start the new counter culture there needs to be modern influences. Back then there was Allen Ginsberg, Kerouac, Hunter S Thompson, Hoffman, etc. Many of the strong voices in the revolution were professionals with college degrees, they will set the tone for the youngsters to follow. I'm going to hit the road this summer before college and hopefully write about it. I smoke weed and drop acid occasionally but I don't plan on being a burnout, there has to be a professional voice supporting the counter culture for it to be taken seriously.
sublimelover17 know what you feel, been trying to find that family for sometime as well, hopefully our generation starts waking up and realize what there doing.
As of last year, I have seen more hippies than ever at my school. And whenever I pick up the Sunday newspaper flyers, it seems like most of the major stores like Kohls, Target, and even Macy*s have hippie merchandise as the main fashion in the young people's clothing sections. I consider myself a hippie and I am all for people getting back into Peace, Love and the great music of the 60's.
That happened back around 1972, too. You could even buy "authentic pre-patched hippie jeans" for around $150 a pair. I can't even imagine what that would amount to in 2010 dollars. When I saw that, I figured the hippie thing was pretty much over and more rapacious consumerism had taken it's place.
Even though this is supposed to be "Hip(pie) Forums" and a gathering place for hippie minded folks, I have noticed some hostility on the other sections of the forums, even in school in real life.... As far as my appearance, not only do I like wearing hippie clothing and hemp but I also go barefoot, partly as a statement of freedom and non-materialism and the fact that I don't want to give my money to Nike and the other shoe companies who use child slave labor. Anyway, while I realize that not all hippies go around barefoot, I am amazed at how many other younger hippies tell me that I should go buy some Birks or other shoes. Why should I have to buy anything? I realize that my bare feet did not cost anything, so I can't show off what I bought at Macy*s, but Isn't non-materialism and living close to the Earth part of being a hippie? I wouldn't imagine that a hippie from the '60s would cut down another hippie for having bare feet.
It's true that we all have to buy some products, unless we're going to be self-sufficient to the point where we only use the things we produce oursleves. From my perspective, the idea of buying stuff isn't so alien to hippies. What I found particularly egregious was the idea that not only had our culture been used to create a highly over-priced piece of clothing, but that there were people out there who were so far removed from hippies that they could spend what was probably the equivalent of $800 on a pair of worn out jeans. And, they wanted to buy them so they could look like they were part of a movement that for the most part abhorred commercialism. I guess I still see a lot of... I dunno, double standards... when I find that mainstream stores like Target and WalMart can make a profit on a culture that pretty much opposes rampant profiteering. It's not that I don't think clothing manufacturers are entitled to make a profit, per se, it's just that hippies would not seem to me to be the best demographic for them to target for success. Buying that stuff seems like the wrong message to send.
There isn't a day in my life that I don't wish I could go in that time machine. I've talked to many people, and had different opinions of that era. But what I realized is that they struggled to be what they wanted too. Think of the people who didn't allow hippies in their restaurants. I personally think thats alot worse then someone bashing you for liking Grateful Dead like they do today. One time I was sitting in my room with my best friend, and I was watching her smoke a joint. When I looked away, i noticed all the posters of dylan beatles dead sandy denny, then i listened to the radio playing, some rock from the 60s. I looked at my lava lamp and said out loud, "We ARE living in the sixties. What in this room, did they not have? This is exactly what they did." You need to think on the bright side of things, I know its hard. But seriously, there is nothing stopping you from achieving what you want in your dreams. So now, go buy a record player, look for some festivals coming up, and chill.
The 60's Peace movement was all about ending the war in Viet Nam, that's what brought people together. The sex, drugs and rock and roll were part of the culture, but not everyone lead a hedonistic lifestyle. A lot of folks who were a part of that era, migrated to the country to live off the land. If you want to experience the 60's now, find yourself an intentional community where the people share your viewpoint. Get back to the land - live off the grid. Reduce your carbon footprint. The movement now is doing things to protect the environment and reducing greenhouse gases. Get involved in those things and you will find peace of mind. Go to the Haight Ashbury and check it out. Go to the Oregon Country Faire in July. Hike in the woods. Get out and look all around! Peace, Spud
Honestly as someone who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area I just want to say Fuck the Haight. Sorry if that sounds negative but read another thread that I wrote: http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=391464&f=12 The one piece of advice I can give you is learn to tell the real people from the parasites. The real cats will share what they've got and came about honestly. The parasites will share what they cheated someone out of and will do the same to you if you aren't careful. But when you meet the real cats share what you've got. I had a friend who used to deal on tour who said it best when he said people on the scene use phrases like 'Family' only when they want something. Drop me a line if you get out here. Peace Out, Rev J
I've been addicted to the 60's for some time now... Watched the Woodstock video and all that other stuff... I was always envious. Then one day I stopped and looked around and I realized that the 60's suck compared to the fun i have! Honestly. There are sooooooooo many things/places to explore in this world and sooooo many great people out there. I wouldn't want to go back in time to the 60s. The gatherings that I have been to would put them to shame. PS. just got back from a regional burning man event The best one i've been to by far. So much LOVE.
theres already so much shit going on today, they just got better at hiding it. todays youth is to filled with pro war propaganda and such. let me say, if WWlll comes around anytime soon, im off to canada.
