i was just wondering if you perming your hair before you backcombed would help the locking progress??? i was just lookin at this old lady's perm n it poped into my mind. Not planning on doing it or anything.
Ever since you signed up I've wondered if there are seven other slimpickens on this site. Also I'm sure a perm damages yer hair and damaged hair gets knotty.
Before I Decided To Start My Dreads By The Totally Natural Method, I Visited Every Hairdresser In Town, And Rang Every One In A Nearby Town, Of The Ones That Had Any Experience *or claimed to* With Dreads, All Said They Backcombed Then Used Perming Solution To Hold Them. After I Explained To Them That If You Use Any Form Of Locking Tis Then Almost Impossible For The Dreads To Form, They Just Looked Puzzled, And Then Mumbled Something About The Client Wanting To Walk Into The Salon With Normal Hair, And Regardless Of Cost Walk Out With Dreads.*no suprises there*... I Guess This Just Comes Back To Living In A "Microwave World", Nowdays Everything Has To Be Achievable In A Few Seconds Or People Don't Want It... Cheers Glen.
alright theres not seven of me. Just tryin to bring up a new topic since the forum is kinda dead. Ill just keep my thoughts to myslef then. And i did say that i am not planning on doing this just CURIOUS.
I agree slim. This forum is dead. Mad lame lately. At least your question had something to do with dreads.
I find the question intriguing. Back when perms were THE THING (in the 70's and 80's), they certainly caused one's hair to tangle more easily. So I can definitely see how permed hair would dread more quickly. That said, perms are terribly damaging and I dunno...depressing, somehow. One of the things I love about my dreads is NOT doing "all that crap" to my hair (using irons, products, etc.).
Before I decided to start my dreads I considered perming my hair since it is super straight and never holds a curl but I was too cheap to pay a salon and too scared to do it myself. Just realized my post does not have much to add about a perm helping dreads, oh well.
My hair was permed before It was backcombed. I didnt really know anything about dreads like I do now but I never thought It was necessary at the time. However the chemicals did dry my hair out alot, and dry almost dead hair holds knots alot better, but my dreads are fine now so Its no that bad.
