I really wanna go to college and get an education, honestly just like anyone else to make good money, move out on my own to a place that makes me happy... okay.

One worry I have, is when I graduate college is there gonna be any help in getting a career, or am I gonna be thrown out on my ass, with a diploma in hand, and no help in direction? Do colleges have programs at graduation to help you find a career?

A lot of colleges do have programs that help you find a job. I know some even have career services departments that help all alumni, no matter how old, find a job.

What do you intend to pursue a degree in?

I'm really interested in psychology and philosophy and something to do with writing, literature or english, and I think business would be a pretty good investment.

So double major in one of those subjects and business.

yeah, im gonna focus more on psychology and business first, I wanna try and be a counsler or maybe a banker, gotta get on my feet... focus more on those two.

and then probably just do my english classes and philosophy for fun, I know being a writer isn't very practical to a career so im working on career goals first.

actually you should really major in whatever discipline you find fun, no matter how practical you may have been convinced it might be.

there are jobs out there, man. jobs in every industry that require writers. technical writers, copy writer, journalist, researchers, author, ghost writer, biographer. and every job you will ever take after you graduate will require you to write well and on deadline.

so you think being a writer may not be practical. well being a terrible hack of a writer is not practical. but you can sure as hell know that the world needs more good writers.

so take it from me, i've been in college for 3 years and i've met all the dumb schmucks who are convinced they have to major in business to get anywhere and the truth is that they're so fuck dumb that is the truth. however, take your passion, your drive, your willpower and courage to do what you feel is your calling and any obstacle(like the job market) will shrink and wither in your grasp.

I agree with mmg. Do what you want to do. There are always jobs in any field if you really want them.

look into 2 year technical schools if you are focused on making money and getting a career. many of these lead into either direct career placement or apprenticeships. seriously, you have a much better chance making it this way than gong to a 4 yr school, and you will get more bang for your buck.

job placement programs at universities and college mean SHIT if there are no jobs out there.. just sayin.

Alot if not most colleges have a "career fair" or even a place with office hours that can help you find a job after you graduate (or even during if you want to start early!)
The only two things i've heard that its hard to get a career from is teaching (unless you're a special needs/french qualified ... thats just in canada though i don't know what the high and low needs are were you are from ) Or getting a PHD in something ... i've known so many people that get a PHD and don't wanna become a prof or anything... and they are just left jobless with a PHD lol. IF you wanna get a PHD in something, don't get it something random like ... Russian History.

I don't see much reason to get a PhD in any of the arts unless you want to be a prof. In sciences sure, but in arts the knowledge isn't exactly practical at that point, so all you can really do with it is pass it on to someone else.

Most colleges have some sort of career services program, and you will also have an academic adviser to help you decide what classes to take, find internship and research experience etc. If you take advantage of these things, they will not just drop you out the door on your head, but it is up to you to take advantage of the resources.

Also, don't make decisions too fast, you have lots of options. Take your time finding a major and a career that you really want to pursue. Don't settle for something because of the money. Money is all fine and good but it means nothing if aren't happy with your life.
