MH veg, HPS flower...............pretty simple really..........or just MH for veg then add a HPS for flower for mixed spectrum. ;)

Both can grow pot just as good as the other one, right?

seems like MH grows smaller dense buds and hps grows bigger not as dense buds.........mix 'em together for dense big buds ;).................that's what i hear anyway......

Well I use a batch of curly tail CFL's from clones through vegging then move over to a 400HPS. I got a tip from somewhere to throw a few Daylight CFL's in with the HPS and noticed some increased plant happiness immediately when I moved a few in there. I had heard there is a little spectrum of light missing from the HPS, at least the one I have, and found it to be true. The Daylight CFL's have a bluish cast similar to MH light. Guess thats why it would be good to mix and match em, thanks to whoever suggested that tip. First time I have seen that advice in print. I have a MH light for my switchable ballast but havent used it in years. I already had the CFL's in place when I bought the upgraded light set. Can't burn MH and HPS at the same time without springing for a new light set then it make it way too hot to run at the same time in my limited space.

lots of people use the mh/ hps on its sides, this kills 180 degrees of the lamp imo.. try making the fixture BU. "base up" and use all 360 degrees of the bulb...
of course you have to have BU or universal lamps..
mixing spectrums is the way to go .. :)

once a week or every other, I like to give my plants a dim light day.. Normally being under 600 to 800watts mixed spectrum.. Ill kick down the lamps to just 8/25W.cfl's .. why I do that, ive just always figured thats its not super sunny everyday outside.. Plants might just need a break.. idk.. I wouldnt water them on this day cause the plants will not suck up very much water, and care must be taken in the winter if lamps are a heat source, might wanna do it when its not really cold and I do get cold snaps indoors..:)

Sounds like a good plan on the break day. Think I already have enough CFL's in the bloom chamber to do the trick. All I got to do is turn out the big light:) Thanks.
