At my college one of my teacher's peers is actually giving a live "reading / book signing thing" about utopian societies. I think she's actually proposing ideas on how to make one. I definately plan on buying the book if it seems to be a good read so I will come back with some scholarly insight. As for my own ideas. Food security, health security, and physical security would make a commune pretty perfect. The only problem is getting everyone to agree on the principles, and finding out how to do it efficiently.
"The only problem is getting everyone to agree on the principles, and finding out how to do it efficiently." A good strong leader can bring people togther as well.:hat:
Very true. Let me give you this example. What is considered a "healthy" diet? There hundreds of diets that can be considered "healthy".... Okinawan, paleo, raw paleo, vegan, raw vegan, pescatarian, fruitarian, etc. So the first job would be to find what is an "optimal" diet. Then unite the people under that banner. If people are united then they can focus their energy into one great project, instead of being divided and competing. IMO if you understand this basic principle, I think we could brainstorm a pretty amazing commune.
Thats a good point, I personally like meat alot. If there is a set "diet" we cand set to a specific groupe.
The only diet that will truely work in a seasonal place like canada is a carnivorous one so its a good thing that you like meat chuck, you will be eating a lot of it haha. Veggies and Fruit just arent happeing during the winter months.. I mean apples\pears you will surely have some preserved but you're going to be eating MEAT. but you're also not going to get sick as a nice side-effect of a wild game zero-carb diet.
There's no set formula for a perfect commune. I guess the best philosophy would be to be "perfectly adaptable". By this I mean being efficient. Don't have a raw vegan commune in the middle of Alaska. Or if you do want to have one, don't buy your groceries from overpriced grocery stores. Make it your mission statement that "80% of fruits eaten will be either apples, pears, or oranges" so that you can buy bulk shipments at a cheap price. If you want to eat meat in Canada, (and want to be self sufficient), have a mission statement that you must be contribute at least x amount of hours towards hunting wild game for the commune. I think applications would be a good too. Stuff like "Top 10 favorite foods, top 5 $$$ costing hobbies (and ~ monthly cost), etc." Information like this is vital in setting up a good organizational structure, and ensuring that your commune stays how u want it to. The more efficient you are the more time you have, the less you struggle, and the happier you are.
The very first step is to get people to show up... Everyone who is waiting for a 'perfect commune' to come into existence to move to may be in for a bit of a shock... There is no one perfect anything that will match everyone. All the plans and ideas of doing this and doing that mean absolutely zero until you actually start taking action. That doesn't mean making another list. That means getting out and doing it... find the closest one to you and go visit it and help out for a weekend or two, see if you fit in with the people who are there. If you don't, go visit a different one. You can have two of the nicest people in the world, who both individually love everyone, yet for some reason they clash with each other. You never know until you spend time around each other. Now just imagine what happens when a group of 10 get together. Plans for growing this, or raising that, or hunting and gathering, plans for off grid systems and long term food storage and all the other stuff, means nothing, without the people to do it. As for the idea of getting people focused around a central idea such as diet. Unfortunately, it is true of the majority of people that they can accept almost any hardship or suffering if they believe in something. That is why religious cults do better in terms of numbers and devotion then you will find in almost any non-religious centered group. But you have to ask yourself, do you want a commune of sheep, all following around a central dogma, or do you want a group of free thinking people, choosing to work and grow together?
i think some were green, would need a water fall, just nature all around with difrent kinds of animals, some butter-flys, happy sining birds, no fences just a fire pit and hut for shelter fertile soil for crops, but realy ou can be any were doing any thing its the way to precive and ur expetashions, when you want nothing ur happy to recive any thing in my eyes, enjoy ur brain storm peace
this is idea is fundamentally flawed. For entertainment purposes; i would say one where i could relax in nature most of the day and produce 100% of the food. Food security is a big issue with me. Next would be 100% of the energy, solar most likely.
I think some people are missing the point... Brain stor on what you think would be the perfect commune. Just trying to get some ideas, this is not for a commune creation just sort reaserch. but so far some decent ideas are comming through tho. Keep the ideas commin
know sorry i was a little drunk when i posterd that... gotta remeber to stay off the internet when wine is involved :S p.s. your name rocks
The perfect commune would be a place of people living off the land with pastures, greenhouse, woodlot, orchards, animals and people of all ages who have common values and philosophy that they choose to live by each day. Decisions would be made by group conscious within the principles of the groups mission. The mission would be healing yourself and your world and becoming a better person and making your world better. The perfect commune would welcome, free of charge, anyone who pledged, or were willing, to follow the mission.
a commune with sudburry school for the yungin's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudbury_school very cool stuff. i you searcht "sudbury school" on youtube you get a lot of information. formal consensus, not informal consensus, everybody has to be trained in it. a storehouse where people can drop off things they dont need and others can pick it up. enviromentally friendly. housings in already made buildings or in underground houses. http://www.resist.com/The%20$50%20and%20up%20Underground%20House%20Book.pdf. underground houses are more efficient than normal houses. Everybody is living very close together for minimal impact on the enviroment. engergy producing. solar panels, wind turbines, etc. communal meditations. lots of oming. people eating together, but its not compulsary obviously.
Well, its nice and warm-fuzzy to consider a perfect anything. However, the intentional communities that are viable, successful and growing while changing are those who have asked and answered the hard questions...most of them concerning human nature and its many assets and liabilities. So to me its a moot point this word "perfect". I deal in the moment to moment realities whether they be ugly or mind-blowing beautiful.
