Bollocks. If people are close to starving they can go to shelters, or the salvation army. Shouldn't be robbing large stores.

If you are poor enough to be bumbling round stealing just to get by, you should probably be considering your own personal salvation and take that up with a priest.

who wouldn't shoplift if they knew they could get away with it?
the problem of shoplifting isn't the people that "need adjusting" so to speak, it's the system itself.
you can't expect everyone just to stay in line. practical thinking shouldn't need to be taught. shoplifters show a far grander theme than the people saying it's just wrong.

Rubbish. Practical thinking obviously does need to be taught. If people thought practically and pragmatically they wouldn't shoplift. Shoplifting is a crime however people see it.

I'm am gobsmacked someone believes shoplifting should be defended. Shall I break into your house and steal your belongings? I could do it, and think of it as a learning curve? :p

But then, considering I am convinced you must be the priest in question, it may be my obligation to take everything from you and give it to the poor!

Oh, and I wouldn't. I 'stole' once by taking something out of a store without paying for it. I got away with it, but I went back in and put it back. But that's just me.

I pretty much agree with the priest. If I was starving and saw no other option I would definately steal.

Then I am the only person with a sense of values and I am alright with that.

Just think the charities, shelters, whatever else- are there to be used.

Plus, around where I live at least half of the tramps are heroin addicts. They are condoned and thus start robbing Asda, and then in turn promptly piss themselves and lay about on the pavements of our towns? No thanks.

Not saying all are like this, but if this window was actually opened, and it was seen as ok- you would get a surplus and good and bad people stealing for one reason or another.

If people disagree then fair enough, but I think there's always another solution.

This man is a professional what? Just another example that religion can be used for is own profitl

"The Rev Tim Jones said in his Sunday sermon that stealing from successful shops was preferable to burglary, robbery or prostitution."

That's like telling us "hedge funds" are legal and profitable. And poor people are responsible for their bad bets. But we have to bail them out, yet the rest of us should be personally responsible.
