So I have a plan to get away from it all but I would like your experiences to help me out.

I want to get away from the materialistic society that I live here in Sydney. I am not lazy but I despise working. Time goes too quickly for something that means nothing (money).

I want to live in an alternate society where I can share with people and be free and happy on a daily basis.

My plan is to work for a whole year, saving the majority of my earnings then buy a motorhome and travel within Australia, but I would like a place to call home.

I know nimbin is apparently not a viable option any more due to the hard drug issue - but where now?!

Anyone who lives a similar sort of lifestyle, could you please help me out and give me an idea of what I'm getting myself into?

    Cheers and love,

    Jason.

you are going to find living anywhere in australia hard if you don't work. get out of sydney by all means if you want to save your sanity.

communes don't really work in australia. the few i've seen seem to be pushing some agenda.

i've met someone who grew up in a commune in nimbin way and she told me that essentially people are always breaking into each others houses to steal peoples personal belongings they want to use. so much for the commune spirit.

you can buy a motor home but choose wisely and know when to move. don't spend winter anywhere lower than mackay, start moving north before winter. if you buy a lemon you'll be stuck with it. you'd be better off just buying a reliable van and sleeping in the back (just make sure you've got decent ventilation).

if you are looking for that alternative society you are going to be sorely disappointed, better to travel around and see what australia has to offer. travelling around australia will be a good way to developing some instincts about people before you go travelling further afield.
