Okay so this is my hair i guess after reading this i am confident enough to start now instead of waiting, long enough?

And as far as the sectioning off and backcombing, is there a longer tutorial than the one in the sticky? I want to have a lot of thinner ones so i want someone to section them off and help me backcomb so i guess i should do them in brick pattern and backcomb them as tightly as possible? Do i need to like rubber band or twine them at the base or the tip to keep them together or is just backcombing enough to hold them into their own clumps? Just wondering as it sounded like the tutorial was discouraging rubber bands but the black woman i know with long dreads told me thats what i should do.

no rubber bands. just say no.

i would say don't backcomb too tightly.. because in my experience the tightly backcombed ones need to loosen up over time before they tighten again properly into dreads. when i've backcombed fairly loosely they've tightened up much quicker in the long run.

BUT i think the general concensus is that t&r is better than backcombing anyway/ gets better results quicker, so maybe give that a try.

Whatever you feel dude, with your hair the way it is now you should be fine. Backcombing would still look kickass, but yeah not too tight; don't overbackcomb.
