I had a dread on its way down a year or so ago. I wound up just grabbing a bit of wool off a llama i was trekking with and wrapped it round the weak spot. It sorta felted up and my dread ate the wool, but it definitely strengthened it, and the dread is still attached today. I imagine one could really use any sort of wool, and if there were a critter you felt connected to its a definite option.
