If all dreads grow normally with just time..
And some dreads end up skinny..
And some dreads end up fat..

how do i get the chubby ones!!1?1?!?

i say the fatter the better! but i cant see a way time will automatically solve this problem for me

for example; damian marley has had dreads for over 10 years i'm assuming. he has skinny dreads after all that time, very long skinny dreads. i dont want very long skinny dreads! i want fatttyyyys

    helpz me

From what I hear, skinny(er) locks are easier to keep over time (as in, for longer times) because they aren't as hard on your neck. But that is all from what I have heard from people with fatties and skinnies.

If you want fat ones, just join them together with crochet, beads, hemp whatever, and then wait. This is easier to do if they are young. For example, I am trying to congo two dreads on my year old ones and they are telling me they like being individuals on the ends but they don't care about the root.

    Depending on your method..

Backcombing - Backcomb larger sections for fatter dreads
Twist and Rip - Twist and Rip larger clumps of hair for fatter dreads
Natural - rip apart the forming dreads into the size that you want them, natural dreads will form their own sizes but will also very easily matt together with other dreads, if you don't rip them they will make one fat dread....if the natural formed dreads arent fat enough as is.

They don't look skinny to me. The best method to get fatties is to go natural as over time locks get fatter and fatter. If you make 2in thick dreads with B/C or tnr you're going to end up with 4 or 5in dreads.

congoing aye? yea i suppose that'd work.
also i think damian has skinny dreads based on the fact that they are so long i would expect them to be much thicker. i mean his dad's dreads were thicker at half the length

Yes, this. My dreads did not start to congo for quite a while, I think it was a few years before they really started growing together, then they went kind of mental and started joining all at once.

Those dreads look really greasy...... REALLY greasy.....

And whoever said those are thin is blind. Look at the dread on the very right, it's one of his smallest and it's as wide as his thumb.

yes i realize his dreads arent thin by our standards. on the other hand, when you look at the fact that he has grown this dreads for the majority of his life, you would expect them to be a bit thicker. most of the people i've seen with dreads for 20+ years have much thicker dreads than Damian.
anyways i'm rambling. i just think theyre skinny for him having them for so long

    ^Maybe you would...

I guess I'll point out the obvious: we are all different people. Damian Marley is not Bob Marley, you aren't either of them, and neither are any of us. It's a little odd to expect one person's locks to be the same as someone elses'...

i mean, thats not really what i was trying to say at all. i just gave the first example that popped into my head.
and im not expecting anyones locks to "be the same" as anyone elses. this was a very broad comparison based on thickness and length. not the fine details of locks.
so i guess I'll point out the obvious: you didnt understand me quite well bud

I just think you're hung up on the Marleys...

I saw what you wrote: you think his dreads are skinny for how long he's had them.

So what? If you want fatties, grow fatties. Why worry about his locks? It's not like any of us can tell you, with certainty, why they don't fit your expectations.

What are you talking about? I think you're taking this way too seriously.

I used an example of a famous persons dreads because everyone knows what they look like or they could easily find out and have a part in the discussion.

I'm "Hung up" on the Marleys by using them as an example for thickness and length in dreads?
    Oh really?
    Good joke.

That would suggest that dreadlock thickness ∝ dreadlock age, which isn't true, dreadlocks do change size over time, growing thicker and thinner as they please and when young they are prone to changing size quite alot until they mature, BUT once matured they don't continue to increase in cross sectional area...that wouldn't make much sense...where would the new mass be coming from? so after maybe 2 years +/- you won't see any radical increase/decrease in size...he could have had his dreadlocks 3 or 30 years, they still wouldn't be fatter if the root area was the same in both cases, because in reality: dreadlock thickness ∝ root area. Larger root area = thicker dreadlocks.

So far I think that this Fool (that's myself just to be clear) and Fred have been downright civil. What's not peaceful about a cat sticking out it's tongue?
