    Do You Like Pitbulls?

Just Interested To See How Many Of You Like This Breed?
I Recently Adopted A Pit And Shes The Best Dog Ive Ever Had The Pleasure Of Having In My Life. She Learned All Of Her Commands In The First Month And Was Potty Trained Almost Right Away. Shes So Eager To Learn And Play And Is Excellent With My 19 Month Old Daughter.
Shes Still A Pup We Got Her At 8 Wks And Have Had Her For 2 Months Now. I Wish All Pits Werent Judged Just Because Of The Ones Who Were Trained To Fight And Attack.

Its Bad Breeders And Bad Owners That Raise These Dogs To Be Mean.
Now There Branded As Mean Terrible Dogs Because Of This.

My Lexus Is Sweet And Dosent Have A Mean Streak In Her.

    She's beautiful!
Pits are my favorite breed. One day I will have one.............
I got to look after one last summer and she was the sweetest thing ever. She thought she was a lap dog. At night she would bark (at whatever was outside the house- cats...people) and then every few minutes or so run into my room to sniff me and see if I was ok....then run back out and continue barking. I felt so safe with her, which was good because I was spending the summer in a new state in a strange house. When I had to leave her I was heartbroken, but hopefully I will have one of my own soon.

    Awww sweet puppy

Kind of like pitbulls in the abstract. Never met any so can't really judge the breed. With the right handling I'm sure they can be wonderful companions, but they still look a bit scary.

had a pit bull / rottie mix who was the best dog ever. he would guard my cats from other dogs when friends brought their dogs to visit. he was so gentle with my friends children, even newborns. even my old lanlord liked Thug: steve thought he was excellent for building security and not mean at all. (steve didn't like pitts at all until meeting thug).

there were so many times when i really think if Thug hadn't been with me, i would have been mugged or worse.....and he never had to do anything, just look scary. he was actually attacked by a full blooded fighting pitt once while i was out walking with my bf and Thug. this other pitt jumped clear over a 4 ft fence and headed straight for us. Thug put himself between me and the other dog and just stood there when the dog attacked him. he didn't bark or growl or whimper or anything, just stayed between me and the other dog. my BF pulled off the other dog and lit into the owner who had come running and apologizing. we probly should have called the cops, but i never did. i was just so happy thug was ok.

i just feel that shows that is really is all in how you love and train your dogs. I miss thug soooo much it still hurts over a year after his passing. i hope your puppy turns out to be just as wonderful. she is certainly as beutiful.

AquaSquish, sounds like your pup was alot like mine:)
im sure hes in heaven watching over you

shes funny she snorts when shes excited, lol.
isnt a constant barker inside or out, only at night if she hears someone come in and cant see them. she def makes me feel safe. One night me and my freind were on the couch watching a movie and lexus was dead asleep all of a sudden she was growling at the front door. My friend chris got up and looked out the window and it was my hubby finishing his cig before he came in. we didnt even hear him and she did. That in itself makes me feel very safe. We live out in a small town and have 1/2 acre of land and cant see shit at night. so im happy she can tell when theres someone there.

she does chase the cats but hoping shell grow out of that!
gosh shes getting so big so fast, ill have to get a recent pic up soon.

    Thanks everyone for your input:)

    merry blessings!

just remember to never ever encourage meanness. the watergun trick used with cats has worked well with my puppy, Zed. But nothing i do seems to make him stop chasing the cats. my kitten doesn't seem to mind, butthe adult cats are not amused. Momma Cat has even taken to hiding under the coffee table and jumping out at the dog (hissing and spitting) when he walks by. poor Zed is so afraid of her.

the barking tho is great. i've never been one to discourage it. it really does make you feel safe to hear that deep woof when your dog thinks something is amiss.

my next door neighbor used to call it "movement on the perimeter syndrome". how cute is it when they wake themselves up barking because they heard a noise while they were asleep. then if the noise is gone, they're so confused.

noones allowed to play tug of war or play fight with her, ive read that it does
    encourage neg behavior.
Her previous owner had 3 kids who layed on her pulled her tail, sat on her, hell did everything to her and so when we got her we had to change the behavior right away. Her owner had the nerve to tell me her kids only hurt her a couple of times and that it didnt effect her. She was nipping non stop when we got her and i know it was because of her kids, and the way she had let them do whatever to her, for wks.
Some people are so ignorant, ha her hubby was supposedly a dog trainer and yet they allowed that to go on for wks without doing anything about it, not to mention she didnt even know what a leash was when we got her.

Shes come a long way! Positive reinforcement can go along way:)
    And tons of love!!

I have had two negative experiences with pit bulls. My husband's aunt had one that seemed perfectly calm and loving, but one day he flipped out and attacked my husband's 80 year old grandfather. The police took the dog away and I don't know what happened to him. Now, my neighbors have two pit bulls and they are very scary dogs. They are fenced in, but some folks in the neighborhood have seen them get out. These dogs have a habit of eating cats and turtles and chasing children. I am afraid to let my daughter go outside by herself and I also don't let my dog outside alone. Those dogs make it scary to walk down the street because they growl and slobber and try to get by the fence. I know that these particular dogs have probably not been raised right, but they have soured me on the breed. I know they are very strong dogs and that I couldn't fight one off if I had to :( I am perfectly happy with my small, weak dog :) I don't think he could do much to defend me, but I know he's not going to hurt anyone.

the only experience i've had with pits was when i worked at the shelter. generally, they were sweet dogs, but STRONG, and hard to manage. many of them were very agressive towards other dogs, even though they had not been raised as fighting dogs. i feel bad for them, because they have a bad rep, and don't fare well at the shelter. everyone is afraid to adopt them, and more often than not, they are put down. i think that as long as they are raised carefully, they can make good pets. yours is adorable, by the way.

I have a pitbull X that I got from the shelter a few months ago. He's absolutely dedicated to our family (boyfriend, cats, dogs and rabbits) He's fine with people and other animals outside of the house but when we're all inside he's VERY protective.

My boyfriend is away right now and I'm very thankful that I have him with me. There are some people in the area that I don't feel comfortable with and I don't doubt that Mikey would back me up if I needed him.

There are a few things about him that I don't like. He is quite stubborn. Even once he learns something he still seems to try to push the limit everyonce in awhile. I've taught him to sit when I open the door to let him in and wait until he's invited. He used to push past me which I hated. Now, he sits nicely but if he's really eager (he hates being left outside) he'll try to get by me. I give him a look and he sits and waits - but he did try.

He also whines for attention all the time. He's very needy. He likes to be at my feet or at my side all the time. And he whines if he can't be.

I'm sure that a lot of these kinks will get ironed out. I've only had him for about 2 months. He's adjusted very nicely and is quite capable of learning. I don't think he was abused or anything before. He seems quite confident with himself.

I don't think the breed is for everyone. From what I've read they are great with all people especially children. My understanding is that they were orginally bred to fight dogs and to be GOOD with people. That was bred into them. They are stubborn though and they need someone who is going to spend time with them and make sure they get trained well. I don't think they should be banned from areas but I do think they should be taken away from people who don't know how to handle them.

Obviously, I have strong feelings about this. :)

I'm going to try and post a pic of my pups but I've never done it in this forum before.

Looks like it worked. It's not the best pic but you can see Mikey and Maverick (Newfie X). I'll look for a better one.

this is an important training point and you have done the right thing. having your pup sit before being allowed into the house strongly reinforces that you are the alpha, not him. it is your den and you are allowing him to share it, not the other way around. this type of reinforcement is very important with stubborn breeds like pitts. having them sit before giving them food or treats is also excellent. you've done well already. keep up the good work.

    sweet pups!!

yes you are right about being very needy and always by you:)
Its get a bit extreme at times but ya gotta love their loyalty.
Mine does the same with the door situation, ive tryed and will keep trying to make her sit before i open it, but never fails 1 out of 3 times she bolts out, or in,lol.

lots of love and there the best dogs, as long as you keep them social, theyre awesome memers of the family:)

    merry blessings!

My wonderful, beautiful, sweet baby pit bull just got seized by animal control and put to sleep. I found out yesterday morning that he was dead. They showed me a picture of his frozen body. Needless to say, I'm furious. He bit a lady....and when I say bit...I do not mean mauled. He ran up to her, and she immediately began SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER. Then, she ran to the neighbor's porch, grabbed a broom, and began hitting him. He jumped up onto her arm, and nipped her a bit. It didn't require any medical attention. Its a very small little puncture wound.

So, in any case, to answer the question, I absolutely LOVE the breed. They are sweet, loyal and very very clownish. Bo was the smartest dog ever. I taught him hand signals so that my deaf friend could control him when he was around, and small children. He loved everyone.

Now, that said, I think that people cannot ignore the history of the breed and some of the instinctual characteristics. They absolutely do have a high prey drive. They will NOT back down from a threat, even if its only a percieved threat. These things are true no matter how lovingly the dog was raised. But, those things shouldn't dissuade anyone from the breed. Anyone who wants one should just be very very informed and probably an experienced dog owner.

I'm crying so hard for my baby right now.

Kiva, I'm so sorry that happened to you. I'm a little afraid of that too but I don't think that I live in an area that is that worried about dogs. I know it that it must be so much worse because you didn't have any control of the problem. :( I feel so sad for you.

Have you thought about telling your side of the story to the local newspaper/tv station? You sound like you know what you are talking about and have a lot to say. It might shed some light on the situation and do a little bit of good for the breed.

You made some good points about the breed. I know that not everyone should own one. And a lot of breeders that don't know what they are doing shouldn't be breeding them. That goes for all breeds though.

I really hope you fell better. I can't even say anything comforting, it's such a loss.

    Take care

Im so sorry about your baby!!
How awful!! I think that is just terrible, sucks how just one incident no matter how minor animals are put down for it. Did someone accidently let her out??
We have a half acre fenced and the fence is about 5 to 6 ft tall, and shes only outside when were with her watching her. I hope he wasnt allowed to just run free...
Either way it happened it still sucks!! They should have contacted you first and informed you on what happened before putting him down. When it comes to this breed though they def dont fool around, i think their harsher because their actually afraid themselves!

    Blessings to you!

Oh and I love in Ontario and they have put a ban on all pitbulls and any breeds that are related to them . That makes me said because they are my favorite dog :(
    *cheers*
