i find myself asking one question every time i draw. is this really art? i dont draw much but when i do its usually only pencil sketches, but i ALWAYS copy something. i dont trace... i would never trace anything but i look at it and then draw it! like Anime characters or cartoon characters. i just copy it, i mean i do give myself credit that they look like the original. I can draw something on my own but im never fully satisfied with the way it looks. i just wonder if i maybe lack the creativity enough to make my own piece of art. anyone have an opinion on this?
Sketch outside of the box, don't restrict yourself. Not every piece is going to be a masterpiece. As long as you enjoy making the art then it should be worth while enough.
everyone interprets art differently. what draws someone in might repel another. i find that when i make something that has more personal meaning to me i'm much more satisfied with it overall. you can always gain inspiration from other art. maybe the best thing to do is find some art that interests you. you never know what will spark your creativity. art inspires art. you never know what your artwork will do for another. try to make art for yourself, and i promise it'll be much more rewarding.
I like to think of my art as never done. I will tell myself i completed a painting but find myself working on it for hours more later on. That might help you. Just think of it as incomplete and ever changing.
first define art...by your own terms. then decide what falls within it. odds are, if you identify with it(anime or cartoons), any rendition you "create" should be considered art. just because it looks the same, doesn't mean it has the same implications in your life, as it did for the one who drew it originally. your metaphorical "finger print" is in your drawings whether you're aware of it or not never stop
When our definition of something applies to everything our attempt at coherent communication founders. Art is the artificial replication of natural phenomenon or the projection of mental fabrications based on natural phenomenon through an artistic medium. We can evoke the same thoughts and emotions from both nature and art but we must distinguish between them. The difference is intent. If an "artist" intends to make art, their product is art. A bunny rabbit is not art. An artist's replication of a bunny rabbit through an artistic medium is art. Both can evoke the same thoughts and emotions but for the sake of coherency we must make the distinction between them. Coherency is your friend. Yes, OP, you are an artist. Perhaps a fledgling but your skill level is neither here nor there. Does it have value to you? If so keep it up. Replication of a replication is still art. Its value is up to its observer.
I understand what you mean. I'm kind of in the same place. I find myself relying on other pieces of art that I copy from to make my art look good. However, I realized that it's merely good practice, if nothing else. And I continue to copy from other pictures, but changing certain aspects of the piece to make it my own. ie. copying a woman's form, but changing the clothes she wears, the color, etc. etc.
thanks for the help/tips. im actually working on something right now. ill try and upload a picture of it when im done
good place to start (im an artist-in-training as well) but dont just go for stuff people have drawn, look for little bits of random insperation. for instence, the other night at about 2am i looked at my wall and in the wood grain, i saw the partial face of a bear, so perfect looking, i got up and started drawing, starting with what i saw, then adding the bits of details i could. i drew a picture of some doctor in an issue of VegitarianTimes magazine, all kindsa random stuff, it helps give veritety, and i find the random insperation is the only kind i can really focus on. hope this helps ^.^
as an artist ive been in that same place. what I suggest is drawing from pictures that you took yourself, or were taken by someone you personally know(it adds a lot to the originality of your work). i used to do a lot of rock star portraits for practice. then i started stealing my friends myspace pics. the first one i did was even selected for an art show. but slowly just change it up a bit. steal pics from all over and slowly integrate your own ideas
drawing from reference photos is very important... when i do an original composition i usually look up stock photos of the subject matter and recreate them in sketches to figure out how to get the essence. and then when im comfortable with the subject i can draw them from memory.
Everything's art in a way. And I'm serious, I don't just mean that in an insightful stoner hippie way.
but my friend. everything is art. look as some of the crazy stuff people called art in the 60s! Andy Warhol made art out of soup cans!
If you feel your Art is Art, then it is Art. If you draw or paint or dance or sing anything, and call it Art, then it is. You don't need people to tell you if it is Art or not, Art is your own official expression of who you are. Only be concerned if others like your art if you are interested in selling or becoming professional... That could be the only exception, if any. Oh, hehe, and I totally mean that in a "insightful stoner hippie way". Take it with you and dream!
marcel duchamp was very controversial with his readymade art. he essentially took mass produced objects and did absolutely nothing to them but put them on display he literally took a urinal, laid it on its side and called it art, having done nothing but putting the ordinary and mundane on a pedestal. artists like duchamp and other dadaists pushed the boundaries of what is considered art to a point where today an artist can create any art as long as he or she views it as such its all in how you view it like everyone here has said
