does anyone ever have this experience: you try to have a lucid dream, time after time, but cannot have one. then on the night that you weren't planning on having a lucid dream, you have one... it just seems like when i pay attention to it and really want to have a lucid dream, i cant have one. then when i forget about it or just want to sleep, thats when i get it. anyone have an explanation or similar situation?
For me, lucidity is completely unplanned. I have the same problem you described. As long as I work on my dream recall regularly, I am lucid at least once a month. But never, ever when I go to bed thinking "tonight I am going to be lucid, and it is going to rock."
cool, thanks for the input. i guess i just need to let it happen and not force it. i'm just wondering more or less, why that is?
I couldn't say, but I do know people that can plan it out and have had a lot of success with it...I just haven't reached that state yet, I suppose.
normally, I heard of this one strategy is to pay attention to the color and blackness behind your eyelids when you are about to go to sleep. apparently if you acn pay attention to it long enough, you'll have something like a "crossover"into dream state. the trouble is that I usually end up falling asleep with no results lol what do you do?
Try doing little things during the day such as biting your fingers to see if you are awake, turning lights on and off (in a dream state the light will not change), etc. Also, if I am wanting to lucid dream I try to fall asleep for a couple of hours, then stay up for another couple hours, then go back to sleep. It's pretty successful for me if I forget I'm doing it lol. Kind of complicated but everyone is different.
that's basically what you'd call a WILD (wake induced LD). that means you stay aware as your body enters sleep paralysis, and if you do it right you go straight into a dream. i don't do that though. basically i reinforce a theme i choose to work with (the beach or other bodies of water) by using a mantra and associating it with lucidity. a lot of times when i see this in a dream i become lucid. i was lucid about every other day for the past couple weeks doing this. actually, pain isn't a very effective reality check. you can feel pain in a dream - you'd be better off doing a 'nose plug RC' or trying to push your finger through your hand... or looking at a digital clock, too. but yeah, it depends on the person. i don't use normal RCs.
well, biting my finger was the first thing that worked for me, up until a few times using it. at first in the dream I wouldn't feel actual pain but a numbness, but lately I do feel the pain. I think it was a great start though.
If you're really determined but have no success, there are a number of entheogens that are most effective. Some are basically safe but some have to be taken with great caution. Theres only one I've worked with and I wont mention it other than to say that if an overabundant quantity is used theres a good chance you'll either be in a delusional state for a few days, or you just wont wake up again... Also, other than being inadvisable to use, it is further inadvisable to use it more often than once a week as toxins can build up and damage your kidneys...
one thing I do is constantly ask myself the question, "am i dreaming?". I would say you have good amount of control over your thoughts and brain while dreaming. Simply ask yourself that question when if you have any doubt at all that you are not really awake but you might be dreaming... The other day I was playing poker in classroom in my dream, I look at my cards and I had an "A" and some other card I cant remember... So i placed them face down on the table like a normal poker player would do, and I noticed that the cards where showing on both sides. so there was no way for me to hide my cards thats when I asked myself if i was dreaming.... BTW no one else but myself knew what cards I had in the table and I wont a big hand haha
