Anyone here listen to 70's & 80's Funk music? Like James Brown,Sly Stone, P-Funk,Roger Troutmam,BT Express etc? This is some good innovative music overall. Larry Graham of Sly & The Family Stone reinvented the bass guitar with the songs "Dance To The Music" and "Thank You Fa lettin Me Be Mice Elf Agin" and Parliament-Funkadelic were one of the first bands to use the synthesizer as the bass with the song "Flashlight". I've also noticed that Funk from back then was one of the few popular music styles that used horns.
Sly Stone and George Clinton (Parliament/Funkadelic) are easily amongst my all time top 10 favourite artists. I'd put Parliament's "Mothership Connection" in my top 5 albums. Parliament's "Funkentelecy vs the Placebo Syndrome" album that includes "Flashlight" is another favourite of mine as is Sly and the Family Stone's - "Stand!", for me these albums and others like them represent some of the best feel good/good-time party music that's ever been written.
Woo how about rick james? give it 2 me babbbyy wutcha sayyy...how bout chaka kahn...she counts right? haha
everybody's funkin' and don't know how, ya shoulda seen the bull when he funked the cow...funked so hard she saw some smoke, she said "let's git in da bed and funk like folks, laughin' at cha....funk used to be a bad eord.....

What I like about songs like "Flashlight" and "Word Up" by Cameo is that these song will never sound old. If you were to play these songs 15 years from now to someone who has never heard them, they would probably think that both songs were new songs.
I've alwaysed thought that a Rick James produced Chaka Kahn album would work. Chaka Kahn's voice and siniging style would sound good with Rick's music.
Absolutely, "Flashlight" is completely timeless, and just look at newer outfits like Outkast for instance, they are completely indebted to the likes of Parliament and Cameo for their sound.
I've only listened to Sly, they're so kick ass. I've never heard Graham Central Station though, better than Sly?
As far as Funkadelic, has anyone heard their album "America Eat's It's Young"? What do you think of it? I mostly have heard Parliament albums and not many Funkadelic's. I'd like to buy one,but I'am not too familiar with most of them yet.
I have a bunch of Funadelic/Parliment vinyl. You really can't go wrong with any of it. The main difference in Funkadelic and Parliment is that Funkadelic is more guitar driven. My personal favs as far as Funkadelic goes are "Satanding On the Verge of Getting it on", "Maggot Brain" and "Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow". America Eats It's Young is good though, to me, they all pretty cool.
Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow is my favourite Funkadelic, then the S/T and Maggot Brain equally, One Nation Under a Groove is superb also. this is a great Funkadelic album site you might find useful http://www.duke.edu/~tmc/motherpage/discog-funkadelic.html
