im trying to go check out the 1987 national gathering site in north carolina. welcome here only says it was near tapoco?(<-sp?) in the nantahala national forest. the original directions to welcome home is what im looking 4. i love u all & ne help is appreciated.
Hey friend! NC 87 was my first gathering and I live (ed) in the area. You need to do a map search/directions to the Joyce Kilmer/Slick Rock Wilderness Area between Robbinsville and Tapoca, North Carolina. Basically all you really need to do is get directions to Robbinsville, stop in that little town, and ask them how to get out to Slick Rock. It is about 15 miles outside the town. Real easy. Take care, HillbillyAnn
Yes, You just go to the sign that says Slick Rock Wilderness Area outside of Robbinsville and head up the mountain road/trail, about a couple of miles or so, and you enter a large meadow area. The meadow is large but not completely flat, and there will be large old growth forest all around you. There are several springs in the area with good water. Also, I think they added the name "Joyce Kilmer" to the sign at the highway since 87. He is the dude that wrote the poem Trees. Brother, all you need to do is get to Robbinsville, NC and you are practically there. Take care, HillbillyAnn
