This might be a stupid question but

I was reading the Space Junk thread and thought
Can't we just take all the trash on our planet and floating around the earth... and throw it into a blackhole?

    Perhaps. You decide.

Nearest black hole from earth: 1600 light years from Earth.

    1 light year: 5,878,630,000,000 miles.

    You do the math.

I think we should make a special effort to send a scientific mission to the nearest black hole. Give all the scumbags, politicians and religious leaders a special credential to go.

even if we could reach it, we dont know enough about the dynamics of a black hole to start throwin shit in there...lol

lol, reminds me of when kids try flushing random objects in a toilet to "see what happens"; which in this case might lead to VERY expensive plumbing bills for mother nature.

    Yes, too far away.
I don't think it is worth: building a multi-generational ship, using up the whole of the planets resources... just to empty the trash - do you?
Why not just float the crap out past our neighbourhood and let space deal with it?

As for attempting to reach a black whole, it would probably make humankind narcissists rather than high achievers if we did try to.

Haha yeah. I think if a black hole can swallow an entire star without complications, it would be able to handle a little bit of trash.

I wouldn't send trash to the sun - no matter how big it is. Its the only one we have. If something fucks up were dead. I like the block hole idea but we won't be able to reach one for maybe 500 years.

i remember thinking this when i was younger. i mean, black holes supposedly compress matter to a ridiculous degree until it collapses...

but maybe sending our garbage into one would widen it, and it would start sucking in nearby matter... and get wider and wider until it sucked earth in too...

    probably easier to recycle.

I was close to a large black hole once, in a thrift store. It was creeping out of a very small pair of spandex shorts. I think my son was scarred for life from the sight. It was definitely loaded with junk too and no light was escaping from the center.

They're sending a manned expedition to the sun next year--maybe they could take some trash with them?

sorry to bring this thread back
but I just thought I'd point out you can't take away immense amounts of shit from the earth.
It will lose its mass because in some sick way all the disgusting stuff mankind has created somehow originated from this planet.

If you take away enough to actually make a change, it probably wouldn't be a good one.

Eh, why not send it to a black hole, who cares how far away it is? Momentum can be had by sling-shotting it around gravitational fields via an onboard AI entity en route. Not like we need to burn tons of fuel to "rush it there" or anything right?

The Sun works too I guess, it's sort of like our own private super-incinerator really.

And I vaguely recall being told in Jr High that the earths crust grows 1/4" in diameter every year due to space dust and crap landing here. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that so I can work to undo the nonsense Ilinois public schools tried filling my head with,,, but if that is the case, I dont think we would be exporting more than that in volume in a year so it balances out methinks.
