I was wondering, is cutting your skin counted as body modification. What do you think?

    why the wrists?

it depends on reasons why you cut your skin...was it an accidant? did you do it on purpose?

also it depends if the cut is permenant or not...or the scar stays there for ever...you're only modifying your body if you're doing it on puprose...

and cutting your wrists is called suicide from where i come from...

You may be technically modifying your body but I think it comes from a completely different direction.

ditto what ^ said. it's a "body modification" because, yes, your body would be modified.... but i think it depends on the context and your definition of "body mod." that being said, i don't think it would be considered one in this forum.

    Technically; yes.
In the same vein as tattoos and piercings = only if you're doing it with conscious intention of body modifying. Like carving a name into an obvious spot - or carving some sorta picture/design.

I cut once, and it looked pretty cool, sorta like a fucked up tally - it wasn't body modification though - it was on my thigh, and done out of curiosity.

Edit: I forgot this specified wrist. In that case; most likely not.

    also:

    http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Cutting

"Cutting is one of the two most common types of scarification (see also: Skin Removal). Cutting consists of drawing a predefined design on the skin via usage of a surgical blade or scalpel. Cutting for negative emotional reasons is considered self-harm."

    so again, it depends

I suppose if you wanted to express something with it but surely there are easier (and prettier) ways of doing that. Like tattoo parlors (getting someone else to do it). :D I mean, that's some kinda prison tat, carving your own skin! Wrist slicing has a reputation and with good reason based on the majority of reasons for doing it, however varied.

It depends on the context. Yes technically, but for self harm I'd be more concerned with your state of mind than body mods. There is a process called 'scarification' which is where you remove or cut the skin to create raised or lowered scars. This is a body mod, because it is for aesthetic purposes.

Haha I was curious Hannerz. I suppose cutting the skin in general to create a picture or sense of symbolism? Haha. Wristcutters unite?

Technically it is. Technically anything is, technically brushing your teeth modifies your body. Though generally I would count it under "psychological disturbances" or "addiction" since it's not normally done to increase the aesthetic appeal of someone but to release negative emotions on oneself :\

I consider carving (as in a name or something symbolic to the person) a body mod... but not cutting (as in an attempted form of suicide)
I used to carve stuff into my wrists all the time, I only ever did it deep enough so that the scar would last for a year or so.
I use it as a mental release. So that image or name is with me, but I don't want it with me for life like a tat.
Like when someone close dies.. their name or something about them goes into my arm... its part of my grieving process. And then once the scar heals... The pain is gone.

Well, yes, cutting your skin can be body modification. Lukas Zapira and others hacve taken this art form to pretty high levels.

With wrist cutting, it would depend on the intent. Iff you are are doing it for the sake of leaving a mark, then its body modification. If itsd the by product of suicidal tendencies, it is self-hurt.

When I was 13 I used to cut and burn myself (self harm) but I did attempt to burn a "C" onto my stomach (It's my first initial). It came out looking like an incomplete square and I still have the white scar to this day. Those who see it either have no clue what it is and they ask...or like my tattoo artist and friends who were into the same sort of thing as teenagers know what it is. The reaction I get is never a good one but I don't care. I still remember the day I did it and how I did it and it felt good to me. It's a part of me I still love. I'd say if you want to cut for a body mod reason go to a tattoo artist who does them correctly.
I also do have a few cuts and burns on my wrist from when I did it when I was young. Now when people see it they automatically think I'm some suicide case....or was.
