do any of you think theres one on the way?i think right now would be a great time for one.i feel like everyone is clueless in this world and i just wanna shout the truth but i cant cause everyone would think i was crazy.would anyone here join the movement?im not talking about following a scene or tryin to be a "hippie", im talkin about tryin to make this world a better place.
Many many many of us are! The time will come! The future is ours, and there will be a better day. Change will happen, but I don't know if we'll take over The Haight again, or any other city. Just stay tuned and never cloud your mind. Stay free and always be true to yourself! Everyone must have the change within before we can change the world! Peace and Love your way...!
i think our revolution would be alot different...and i dont think people will just simply change on there own.
I was referring to Hippies. Not society. But it still counts for anyone. No one will change their values unless they want to. We can only bring out the un-truths and faults in the world so much, if their really listening it will make them think, and therefore 'change' them. The original Hippies did just that, they led by example. We must be the change we want to see in the world.
I think it's very debatable if the original hippies did much of anything at all. The original hippie movement led to a period of uber capitalism in the 80s - which chilled down a bit in the 90s - and just completely blew up towards the end of them.
I'd like to find a community of people with hippy ideas and values. I think they're around. Probably more so on the coasts.
And college areas. Pittsburgh has a bit of them. More hippie posers than hippie-minded though. The sort that don't shower because apparently it's natural to stink; but hang out at the Crazy Mocha or Starbucks instead of the indie coffee shop down the street; and tell homeless people to 'fuck off' (actual quote overheard).
Well they were definitely not the cause of that. They opened up cultural and religious values. Brought lots of attention to the war and Vietnam. Had civil rights movements. They brought about a change for the world. They definitely did something.
We left the war to cut our loses - not because of the attention brought to it. The major civil rights movement of the 60s may have been helped by the hippies a bit, but that change was gonna come. I think you have to give credit where credit is due, and MLKj and the other heads of the movement (one black lawyer I can't remember the name of comes to mind) - could've done that without the hippies. What cultural and religious values? Long hair and cults? Even if they weren't the cause, they were one of the steps leading to it; and I'm still going with they were the cause. Strong rebellion tends to lead to another rebellion. The original feminist movement led to the extreme patriarchy of the 50s, which only led to another feminist movement. Then the third-wave feminist daughters of the second-wave feminists only led to what we have now - which is girls acting out the negative male stereotypes. 90% of the hippies grew up to be yuppies. The only thing hippies really did to affect our society is make yuppies that buy things that are labeled 'green'. True change comes over time. A strong movement always leads to a backlash.
I'm not the one to speak for hippies, I just share the ideals. There are lots of others who could have this convo with you. What caused the rebellion was an already capitalistic world. They did not 'cause' it. You can't blame the hippies for the backlash. They rebelled to make the world a better place. Whether you think they helped or not is your opinion. Were for Peace and Love. We just want a safer world.
BTW I never said hippies caused the civil rights movements. I said they had them. They were the change in the world that they wanted to see. That's all i'm saying. If you think they did nothing, they did nothing for you. The government definitely felt heat from americans about the war in Vietnam. It was a war that no one was supporting. They ended the war to stop getting the young sons of the USA killed in a war that was not supported.
I can blame them. I can't blame someone like John Lennon, or Abbie Hoffman - but the overall group; damn sure I can. I share many of the ideals myself; but calling myself a hippie, effectively making me a member of a subculture, to be lumped as a separate group of people; seems like the least effective way to achieve them.
You share the ideals but think they did nothing...ok. If you stay true to yourself, and your a hippie, you don't care about being lumped into a 'group'. Believing in non-violence, peace, taking care of the world and staying free is not affected by being a called a hippie at all. Your blaming them for the US returning back to the same country it was (for the most part) even before the revolution? How is that the hippies fault if they were out to do nothing but good?
So I can't think peace and love and human rights and freedom are awesome if I think the movement failed? No, but other people's perceptions are. You don't get people to change their values by being in a separate group form them. No, I'm blaming them for sending America into a tailspin in the wrong direction by betraying the ones that were trying to lead them into a revolution. Most of the hippies left Woodstock and went straight to the stocks on Wall Street. A good intention is just an intention - nothing else. Intentions mean squat in the physical world of action.
My sense of the discontent of our youths and our subsequent rebellion, was that the whole affair was symptomatic. Similar I would say to indigestion from a diet of sour grapes, i.e. the mess of things the way they were. For any amount of time you step out of the system, the system has no hold on you. That moment of emergent sanity was enough to lend light to the world. However, our parents had never taught us any life skills, only the lowly art of compliance. So it's back to the drawing board for everyone. Some continue to explore and develop. Many many were so young as to not have had time to grow into any true motive. The cancerous system is boiling up at this moment. But instead of belching this time, we need to understand that the system persists only as long as it is fed. We need to learn to take care of our selves first and then we can care for each other.
Well, with the green movement going strong - I don't see how we have enough land to make such a dream possible. Not that I see it possible socially; but I really see it as impossible from a practical standpoint. The best way to change the system is from within. The problem is; it's mighty hard for anyone good to get in the system; without the system compromising them. Someone like Ron Paul can get major interest - but when it comes down to voting time, people only want to pick someone they see as a contender - effectively killing any of the less-popular would be contenders. (Although, Ron Paul may be a bad example, because he is in the wrong party for sure.)
I just meant it's kinda weird how your so "anti-movement". And no people's perceptions aren't important. We don't care of what others think of us. Well I know most of us don't. Most definitely don't want to be included with those we preach out against. People aren't gonna change themselves unless they want to period. So whether or not your called a 'hippie' regularly has nothing to do with getting them to have revolution inside them. More then likely if you start talking about your ideals they'll call you a hippie anyway. Being a hippie is not a shameful thing.
Labeling yourself is almost always shameful. I always thought it was very anti-hippie as well. Anyways, I wouldn't call myself a hippie for many more reasons than the label being stupid and backwards. I share many of the ideals, I said - definitely not all of them. And the perception of the minds you are trying to change seems rather important if you are truly wanting to change them. But I find most hippies aren't - which was the biggest problem with the first movement. The hippie label seems to be an ego-booster for those who call themselves it far more than anything useful. Where the fuck are all the old hippies anyways? I really would like to hear their thoughts on all of this.
