I am thinking of getting the coil after I have my second child (I don't want more than two). So, I'd like to know what experiences people have had of the coil, any pains or problems or if it worked well for you? I'd like some kind of long-term contraceptive for myself and my husband (I hate the feel of condoms to put it mildly and I'm terrible with pills) but I don't know if I'd want something as drastic as tube tying, especially at a young age.

    You're talking about an IUD?
From a mans perspective, my ex had one and for the most part no problems but...
I remember once thrusting so deeply,
I hit that little wire with the tip of my err uhh... ;)
Well, it hurt alot and really blew the moment.
I went from ecstasy to pain and anger instantly!

its not in any way coil shaped anymore.
ive had an iud for a few months now and its working great for me.
if you get the copper (cheaper) one, you run the risk of having more painful periods. mine is actually less painful. i used to have unbearable cramps for just one day, now they are manageable but spread over three or so days.
the other option is a mirena iud which secretes small amounts of hormones and actually makes your periods less painful or stops them from happening alltogether. its expensive though.
my bf has never felt it during sex, and when i feel it to make sure its there, the string feels soft and i cant see it hurting him.

That's interesting... if it's shaped nothing like a coil, why is it called a coil colloquially? The downside that I can see is that I wouldn't want painful periods because of it. I'm lucky enough never to have had a painful period, never getting cramps or anything, so I wouldn't want to get one just because I have an IUD in.... :)

Yup, my ex had the "Copper 7" But I think that one was discontinued...

She did have some painful periods at first but according to her,
smoking pot was the ultimate menstral pain relief!:sifone:

i believe there used to be ones that were coil shaped. now theyre sort of a "T" and mostly made of plastic.
apparently in asia, most women wear a simple metal ring in their uterus for contraception.
if you want to shell out the bucks, you could always get the hormone one and then your periods would be lighter and not painful.
also, they are very easy to have taken out if you dont like it. you just go to the gyno and they pull it out with the strings.
i have to say, i love it. it doesnt mess with my body nearly as much as the pill and i never have to think about it except to check that it hasnt fallen out once a month.

The hormone one sounds very interesting actually, I've heard about it but not an awful lot. I've checked and it can be covered by the NHS, so gladly for me I probably won't have to shell out the money (I hope, unless I have to go private...)
I'll have to have a long think about it anyway, and besides, I can't do anything until I have my baby. I might even change my mind before then what to do, but for now I am sure I don't want any more kids.
Keep it coming guys by the way, the more people who give personal experiences the better I an make a decision, hopefully. :)

I had the minera IUD (the hormonal one) It was absolutely awful. I endured a yeast infection for almost 7 months (off and on) until I said enough was enough. I had it removed and the infections have disappeared. I just kept thinking that this was the last one I would have... Plus I spent over $200 on it so I really wanted it to work.

Having it put into place was done in the hospital, but it was not painful... more just a little uncomfortable at times. The removal was absolutely painless and quick just done in my doc office.

We since have decided that our family is complete and so my husband has had a vasectomy so that is our current choice. lol

Good luck in what you choose.

I have the Mirena. Inserted in June.
I had a couple weird months, but now no problems. And no periods. and ALMOST no pms.
One of my then partners is over-endowed and he hit the strings only once. His comment was "I think I felt something" so we adjusted the angle slightly.
