Does anyone happen to know how I would go about connecting my 360 to to my television using the HDMI cable and at the same time somehow directing the sound to an external amplifier for surround sound? I think Microsoft may have fucked me once again...
You probably have to have a television with an audio out. Edit: I say this not having even glanced at the HDMI specification, or ever hooked up anything with HDMI, or even touched an xbox 360 but, based on that question, and assuming you know what you're talking about I'm going to go with that answer Most faith in humanity I've shown in an answer all day.
can't you just run it all through your sorround sound equipment? Some stereos you can hook everything into, then run extra cords from the stereo to the tv for picture? idk
yea a really awesome surround sound receiver would have hdmi inputs from all your av equipment and a single hdmi output to your TV.. that said, ps3 does, in fact, support exactly what you want to do. It's a pretty obvious setting under the audio settings submenu. It would be pretty reasonable for 360 to have similar functionality. But i don't have a 360, so I can't say for sure.. http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/xbox360/kb.aspx?ID=909337&lcid=1033&category=hardware
360 HDMI cables usually come with a 360 video connector dongle with RCA and digital audio output. Check out dealextreme dot com they are under 6 bucks shipped. Or like Dave said, most TV's have audio outputs for your stereo. Also don't go nuts buying expensive HDMI cables, they are a ripoff as HDMI is a digital signal. The video signal is either on or off. I've also got to say I love 360 dashboard and setup WAY better than the PS3. I repair both systems and when I plug in PS3 it always autodetects to 1080P and I can't figure out their crazy settings to have it save a more compatible resolution so the owners usually have to hold the power button to rest. I find the 360 is like a zillion times more intuitive and easier to setup and manage. Also way easier to take apart, clean and repair, not to mention hack.
