I feel the majority here will say time is the answer, especially for locks so young.

It is normal to have loose roots...just look at half the people here.
I say give it lots of time.

I dont see it complaining just asking a damn question

Anyways, yes root rubbing can help i have some in the back that are pretty knotted up and Look great and there only 3 months old. The ones on the top of my head are a little harder to knot up so i just let them be..

    Good luck..

You haven't had dreads for even close to enough time for you roots to be locking.

    what captain cannabis said.

my roots for some reason always stay kind of knotty. i wouldnt call them locked, but i have to wiggle pretty hard if i want to stick my finger through the bottoms. i dont do anythihng really to "help" them lock up. I've tried root rubbing or clockwise rubbing, whatever you want to call it. it makes them FEEL tighter, but it only lasts a few hours, or a few days at best. kind of a waste of time if you ask me.

i think it all depends on your hair.

some people get 6 inches of loose hair at the roots and there is nothing they can do to change it. some people, like me, i have about half an inch of undreaded hair at my roots, maybe 2 or 3 inches on some, but for the most part they stay tight. but I dont do anyhing, i think its my hair that just kind of does it on its own.

as was said before your only a month and a half in...... leave them be.

those loose loops will eventually suck together all the loose hair and form dreadlocks... thats what you want.

    I don't get this.
Why clockwise? I suppose the point that is trying to be made is rub them in a uniform way, but that still doesn't make sense to me.
Rubbing is rubbing, and I think the more random it is the better the results will be (whatever they may be).

In theory, clockwise is the direction that hair naturally swirls... but I agree with a captain. I used to root rub, but have found it to be a waste of time.

Most of my hair near my roots is not locked... just straight. I just leave it. =)

ok, with your roots, thy shouldn't have grown that much in 1.5 mos. besides, you hair needs enough length to create a knot. loops are a sign that your hair is locking.

rubbing anti-clockwise causes dreads to un-knot and a baby orphanage to explode

you can take some thread or dental floss and sew the loose roots together and eventualy the tread will disingate and the dreads will be tighened or if the root is long enough than you can braid it, just take the loose part and weave it to gether in a braided fasion and eventually it'll turn to dreads
