I hope to get dreads one day and have been considering doing the twist and rip method. But I've been thinking about using the freeform method instead. I think my hair would turn to dreads pretty fast with free form (maybe a month or 2) because of the texture. Also I like the uniques look that each person comes out with. The only problem I have with the freeform method is how crazy your hair can look at first while forming them. Should I go the freeform route, I'd probably want to keep them tied down during school/work (when Im old enough :p), at least until the hair starts to lay down a little better.

This led me to the question: Would having one's hair tied down while using the patience method to create dreadlocks would hinder the formation of the dreads?

Also would having your hair tied back while the dreads (freeform or not) are young create indentations and zig zags in the dreads?

Can you guys give me your personal opinions on freefrom dreads vs twist and rip/backcombed? What do you like most about each and like least?

it wont mess up your dreads dude dont worry about it! also, dpending on the length of your hair, in my opinion, newly backcombed dreads look at lot worse than neglected dreads. just go for it!

    try neglect.

with the neglect method, you get none of these silly questions.

Not gonna happen. You'll have knots by then, but they don't become dreads for a long time... The same is true of backcombing and TnR

All young locks look crazy. I agree with Dread&Dripping that young backcombed locks look especially crazy and weird. I haven't really seen freshly done twist and rippers...

I put my locks up a lot and it hasn't caused me problems, but I wouldn't leave 'em in a ponytail all day or anything... hats are a good way to hide the mess if school/work is cool with that

I dunno about zig zagz (funny loops and kinks will happen anyways unless you wax or crochet or palm roll like a fiend) but I have curved a couple of my locks by using them to tie up the rest... not really what I want so I stick to hair ties, headbands, bandanas, and hats

to quote the great soaringeagle: just make sure that if you tie it up, leave it out for the same amount of time each day.

Good luck on your dread journey, i'm excited to hear how they turn out. I wouldn't worry overly much about "messing them up" tho, dreads are a mess, and that's just how they are, especially if you're going neglect/freeform. Besides, it's the kinks, loopies and curls that make them unique and awesome.

Also, tying them up shouldn't be a big deal.

Kay cool. I guess Im kinda overthinking it huh. And I probably should have rephrased the "dreads in two months" thing. I just meant that my hair would probably start to look dready by then. And the leaving hair down for the same amount of time its up thing sounds good. Thanks for da help :cheers2:

I've had backcombed hair for about four months now,

and they still don't look dready. If you go in expecting your hair look awesome right away,
    you will be very disappointed.

if you want your hair to look dready in two months you need wax!!!

wax is the only way to get dreads in 2 months

use a lot of it and you have to put more in every time you wash your hair.

    wax makes dreads look sex

Ive never heard the term free form dreads before. =]
Yeah...dont worry about it. As someone already said....you cant mess dreads up. Your hair will knot and dread up with time regardless if it's tied back most of the day or not with any method you use.
